A new M1A1 = $4,300,000

When you say “operatable” do you mean one that can drive around, or one that can drive around and also shoot up stuff? If you’re looking for the latter, look harder because you’ll find that the main gun will be disabled.

In any case, if you’re planning a nice suburban rampage, you can be sure there’ll be lots of cameras recording it. Just stay away from highway dividers.

I doubt even Bill Gates could buy even a non-firing M1A1 MBT. I think the US Govt has restrictions on selling military hardware to individuals.

Actually, 60 Minutes ran a piece on some guys who managed to get an Apache helicopter via the surplus market. Admittedly, it was all in pieces and they had to put it back together, but they did. Supposedly, the government’s changed things so that this can’t happen again, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Damm, the morning commute can’t be all that bad

      • I think that Tom Clancy was allowed to buy a US M1 Abrahms and was given a top of the line Russian tank by the Russian government, both with disarmed weapons. I seem to remember seeing a blurb on him stating that at that time, he was the only private individual in the world to own either vehicle, and even more than that–he owned both.

Larry Niven did a non-fiction piece once about a friend who was a museum curator – and his museum, through reconstruction from parts, has a functional (if “dry”) ICBM.

no, the main gun doesnt need to work, just the fact that… Hey, screw your hummer, i got THIS!!!

Was this before or after his ugly divorce of some years ago?

“My wife got the tank in the divorce”

What the heck, if each gets a tank, well, there goes the neighbourhood!!!
