Miller beer and formadehyde

Does Miller beer contain any formaldehyde and if so what percentage? And how much Miller beer would you have to drink to embalm the average person? Thanks ed.

I had heard a rumour that all the beers brewed in Thailand contained formaldehyde to stablise the product in the tropical heat. Wouldn’t this be easy enough to test for? And what would be the expected side effects of steady beer w/ formaldehyde consumption over let’s say a 1 year period. Is it a gradual toxicity? Does it cause posting to the SDMB?

I’d be far more interested in the effects over a 35 year period.

I’d say considering all the other chemicals you consume in eating fruits and vegetables, preservatives in almost everything. It really doesn’t matter.

Steve here. Ed is a friend that posted the question.

A search found that Miller seems to use more crap that Bud.
Kinda strange to learn of the things in our food. Strange because we’re gonna keep eating/drinking the stuff. Personally I am stuck on Samual Adams, please don’t tell me if they use old socks to filter the light bulbs that did not get ground fine enough - or something.

Reeder, YEP! I have a friend that is careful about beef and beer intake for health reasons, and that is cool, but that same person will NOT wear a respirator while welding aluminum or galvanized steel.

Thanks for the replies,
Steve

i’m fairly sure formadehyde is not too toxic. you actually get a small amount in any alcoholic drink eg wine and other stuff. it is pretty unreactive (that’s why dead things dont rot in it) so it’s not going to do you much harm. i’d be more worried if my drink contained meths.

I’m afraid you’ve got it backwards, Niobium. Formaldehyde is very reactive. It retards decomposition by reacting with and killing the bacteria and microorganisms that would otherwise break down the body.

Formaldehyde is indeed poisonous, but you’re going to get a small amount, indirectly, with any drink. All alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol in addition to ethanol. Wine contains the most, properly distilled spirits the least, with some vodkas containing none at all. In the breakdown of methanol, your body produces poisonous formaldehyde. This formaldehyde is, in small quantities, a major contributor to hangovers, and in larger quantities quite lethal.

ah, sorry. i have a degree in chemistry too! how embarassing :o
