Let’s assume for a moment that the jury wasn’t paid off handsomely for their verdict. There must be something more to the story, right? There is— or God help me, I choose to believe there is— no way in hell that 12(?) people, no matter how British they are, actually found that preposterous excuse credible, right? And apparently without much deliberation, even?
The only explanation I can fathom is that they believed it was consensual sex, that the woman made up the rape claim, and they basically disregarded the defendant’s idiotic story as a laughable, but ultimately irrelevant, attempt at covering his own ass for unknown reasons.
Anyone got an alternate theory?

Bribing a whole jury in a western country seems unbelievable to me. And the “I fell into her” claim seems so ludicrous (*) that there must be more to this story than what is reported.
(*) Although after all weird stuff sometimes happen. You’re still not going to convince a dozen people it’s the truth even if it were actually true.

For some reason I am reminded of the Fugs’ album “It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest”.
This will be it, basically. Rape is hard to prove. If the jury concludes it can’t be sure beyond a reasonable doubt that there was rape, then he gets off. A safe way to be sure you don’t know what actually happened in a court proceeding is to read about it in the media.
Journalists take pride (I assume) in making sure they never report on cases accurately. There’s no other possible explanation for how they make such a total bollocks of it so consistently.
