Does anyone know how many animals were injured or killed during the filming of Milo & Otis? I’ve heard rumors of up to 29 cats dead, but no credible sources.
I had no idea that ANY animals were killed during the filming of that movie. They have laws now protecting the animals, and designated people are there during the filming to make sure these rules are met. Maybe this wasn’t enforced during the filming of that movie
That was one of my favorite childhood movies and I still love it! It’s incredibly curte. The part where they’re floating thru the Dead Swamp or whatever its called, always spooked me!
blink, there are laws in the US but Milo and Otis wasn’t filmed here. According to IMDB, this is a Japanese film *Koneko monogatari *, and filmed in Japan over a four year period.
It is discussed more in depth in the Viewer’s Comments section of that site
Yes, and you will note that at the end of the movie, it says that the animals were supervised, but it doesn’t say that none were harmed.

…and how many times would you see a crab walking across a farmyard, and how many of THOSE times would a cat be curious enough to sniff it out?
Maybe the wife was going to cook it for supper that night but it got loose somehow.
I didnt know it was filmed in Japan! In all seriosness, do they eat cats and dogs over there? No one talks about the Japanese doing that.
I have tried to search for any reports done about the animal welfare on the movie, but I can’t find any
As you might guess, I saw this movie when it first came out. Although I cannot provide a cite, I remember at the time the American press asking questions of the people who produced the movie, and they stated that no animals were harmed in the making of the movie. I don’t know if I trust this statement; I remember the same interviewee stated that the pug pup “enjoyed” the scene in the water with the bear. That scene turned my stomach! Poor pup trying to keep from drowning by climbing up onto the bear and repeatedly getting pushed under the water by the bear. Ugh.
I still think its a cute movie…Im renting it this weekend.
I don’t seem to recall the parts where there was animal cruelty, I guess I will find out though.
