I set it to 20x20 with 300 mines, and it didn’t long before I came across an 8.

Up to n=24, it seems that you can set the game to nxn, with (n-1)^2 mines. Your first click is always free–so your best bet is 24x24 with 529 mines. You get an 8 almost every time.
