My guess is that Lucas learned how the mitochondria, energy-producing organelles in our cells, actually are/were a seperate organism in a symbiotic relationship with our cells, and thought that so neat and interesting he ramrodded the concept into his SW universe.

I dunno… Parasite Eve had a pretty cool plot and some genuinely scary moments. Heck, I think I have fonder memories of that game then I do of the first two SW prequels… if only he’d learned more. But thanks for pointing out the connection… but yes, midichlorians are lame. 'Course, so is most of the rest of the two movies. I just pretend they didn’t happen…
