mini rant just because I'm having a bad day

I didn’t want to put this in the Pit, because I’m not really that mad…just vaguely annoyed. I promise I won’t curse.

First, I get a commission check once a month, in addition to my regular salary. This month my check didn’t show up. I’ve heard vague rumors that my position will now get paid commission at the end of the year in one lump sum…not monthly. I had no notice and, in fact, have still not been notified formally. I spoke with my supervisor about this, he said that the rumor I heard was probably true…he had heard something about that, too. He’s checking into it for me. Is this legal? Can they just change your compensation without telling you? I’m worried that at the end of the year, they’ll say woops! No check!

Second, another person in my office is having her last day today. Instead of replacing her, several of us just got emails with a list of all her job responsibilities and which of them we’re each going to now assume. On her last day! So, I guess I’m going to go and stand in line to get all the information from her that I need to do these things.

Third, I had an eye exam a few weeks ago. The doctor told me that my contact lens strength was on the border between two things. She gave me a sample, told me to try them out and give her a call to place my order if they worked out. I did that and the person who answered the phone said that I had to come in and see the doctor again in order to get my lenses…and she wants to charge me for a visit!! (I plan to take this up with the doctor).

Like I said, nothing major, but I feel better now that I vented.

Geez, that job thing sucks. Do you have a written contract or something in writing regarding when you are paid? If so, it sounds like you have a case. If not, I’d say you’re screwed. How you’re supposed to live after probably basing your budget on your average commission is beyond me.

Chumps!!

Hope your day gets better!

Nothing in writing. For me, it wasn’t so big of a deal, because I treat the commission check as bonus money…I usually do something special with it like buy something for the house, etc. It was the principal of the matter, though. Some other people with my same job title, though, were really hurt by it. The atmosphere within our company is such that it isn’t a really good idea to make waves, either. They’re on a firing frenzy.

My day is actually starting to look up…I’m going home in ten minutes!!

Years ago I had a job (w/o any employment contract) that required I fill out a time sheet as well as supervise all the other time sheet folk. I worked a lot for them and usually had some overtime. Finally a pay period rolled around where I’d worked through a couple of nights and had a hefty bit of overtime. The week passed, I got my paycheck - no overtime!?! I went to ask my generally inaccessable boss about this, and, as usual, could not see him. But his secretary did mention that he had said, “What’s he turning in time sheets for? He’s salaried!”
