Mini-series of the Odyssey from the mid-70s

Back in the mid-70s, I remember watching a mini-series of the Odyssey, probably about eight episodes and likely a BBC production.

Does anyone else remember it? Is it available on DVD?

I remember watching this one, but it wasn’t in the '70s:

Sure you’re not thinking of the feature film starring Kirk Douglas? :dubious:

Coul it be this?

Italian (not BBC) production but from 1968. I’m pretty sure it’s the one I saw on a French channel in the summer of 1990.

That looks like it. The wiki article says that it showed in Canada in the late 70s. Thanks!

No, definitely not Douglas.

It probably wasn’t this one, since the date is wrong, but I’d like to throw a plug in for the Hallmark Network version with Armand Asante from 1997. It was a two-night event IIRC, and was later available on DVD:

Henson’s Muppet Workshop did a lot of the effects, and executive producer was Nicholas Meyer, the King of Good TV Movies. It takes quite a few liberties with the story, but overall is the most faithful version I’ve seen. It does a particularly good job of showing Odysseus’ chummy relationship with the gods. It’s also worth watching for the interesting cast –

Bernadette Peters as Circe

Vanessa Williams as Calypso

Christopher Lee (!) as Tiresias

Michael J. Pollard as Aeolus, the god of the Winds. I swear, the only thing I remember him from was that first-season episode of Star Trek , “Miri”, but I heard that voice and I instantly knew who he was – can’t trust the “grups”

Ooooooooooooooooooh, my God, yessssssssssss!!! Mmmmmmm, mmmmmmm, mmmmmmm!!! :o

He was great in Bonnie and Clyde, too. If I were making a movie version of Going after Cacciato, I’d want Central Casting to find me a “young Michael-J-Pollard type” to play the title character.
