When I looked at this month’s work schedule I discovered that I somehow ended up with 6 days off in a row next week. A friend has overlapping days off so we’re going to take some sort of small road trip. Just one or two nights away for a change of scenery. I just don’t know where to go as a winter destination. All the ads I hear at the moment are for ski areas but my friend doesn’t really ski. Any suggestions for get-aways that are easily drivable from the greater Newark, NJ area?
Cross country skiing has a lot lower skill threshold than downhill skiing, and it’s cheaper as well. So you could try a XC ski area maybe combined with a nice bed and breakfast.
How far are you willing to drive? Vermont is a good choice and world’s away from Newark but it depends on how far you want to go. Like you said, it is ski season so it is not cheap but you will remember it. Washington D.C. is in range as well for a completely different idea. The Smithsonian museums and other tourist attractions aren’t crowded this time of year.
It depends what you enjoy.
If you like road trips and winter scenery, I’ll second Vermont and the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Just drive at random for a couple of days, then shoot west and make a beeline for home down the Thruway. (Or the Taconic Parkway, if you have time.)
If you like museums, I’ll second D.C. It’s a short day’s drive, so you’ll have most of an afternoon, a full day for the Smithsonian or history, and a morning.
They’re both good ideas, it all depends what you’d enjoy.
