Haven’t been in the twin cities area for quite a few years. May find myself there this summer and am planning our visit.
Minneapolis VS St. Paul. Which is better for nightlife. I’m talking partying. Bars, nightclubs, live music. Not museums and other cultural stuff. Preferably close to a downtown hotel where we can hit places by walking or short taxi ride.
I haven’t spent a huge amount of time in the twin cities, but here’s what I’d say. The nightlife is not impressive when compared to other American cities of the same size. Both cities have a few bars and nightclubs in their downtown areas but not a whole lot.
Minneapolis, there are a lot of bars and restaurants along the north west end of town running along First Avenue and Hennepin. There is the famous First Avenue.
Stay? Lots of hotels you can stumble from the bar from in the area. If you want something special, The Nicollett Island is is a favorite for romantic getaways.
Its been a nightclub forever and its stage has seen a lot of famous bands over the years. Its the club from “Purple Rain” and it really hasn’t changed since they filmed it.
Remember, Minneapolis is a big college town. There are plenty of bars spread around the city and pretty much all of them will have live music 2 or 3 nights a week.
I would say that the best area for your purposes would be downtown Minneapolis, specifically the area more or less centered on 1st Avenue N and 5th St. N. Lots of bars, nightclubs, music, etc. The mentioned First Avenue is two blocks south of there. For hotels, the Minneapolis Loews is pretty much smack in the middle of the area (1st and 6th), but there’s a new Hampton Inn opening at 1st and 8th next month that will probably be more reasonably priced, and still just a couple blocks walk from the action.
Alternately, you might check out the Old St. Anthony area, just across the river from downtown. This is a slightly more divey area, containing the aforementioned Nye’s. (Note: Nye’s may be closing this summer to get redeveloped into an apartment tower, so check back in a couple months.) The Nicollet Island Inn is the only hotel in the neighborhood, but it’s just a longish walk or short taxi/bus ride over the Hennepin Avenue bridge from the downtown hotels mentioned above.
