Misinformation in "What's the difference between white eggs and brown eggs?"

In the above article it is stated that brown eggs come from Red-feathered red-earlobed fowl. It is true about the ear lobes, but not the feather color. Black Jersey Giants (all black fowl) lay brown eggs, as do the white jerseys. Light and Dark Brahmas lay brown as well, and they are black and white. Wayandottes in their myriad of colors lay brown as well.
Ear lobes are the only true indicator of egg color.
White ear lobes = white eggs, red or dark ear lobes = colored eggs.

See the Oklahoma State University poultry site, Ideal Hatchery’s poultry pages, or Feathersite.com for further breeds that disprove the red feather statement.

Welcome, indgoviolet. Great first post.

When you are discussing a column by Cecil or a staff member, it’s helpful to link to it so we can all follow along.

It’s as simple as copying and pasting, but you can pretty it up if you so choose.

What’s the difference between white eggs and brown eggs?, a staff report from Euty.

Doing a quick search on the topic yielded this nice tidbit: [

](Murray McMurray Hatchery - Frequently Asked Questions)

There was a local chicken farmer who bought fish waste from the docks and used that as supplemental food for his chickens. He then stumbled onto a source of even better and cheaper protein. Lobstah! Yup, there were local processors who removed 98% of the meat from lobstahs for freezing and then tossed the shells - with 2% of the meat left inside. So the farmer took the waste, ground it up and used it to supplement the feed. (Kind of like hot dogs for humans  )

After a few weeks of the lobster meat, lobster shell enhanced diet, the chickens began laying eggs with the shells tinted red! While an interesting novelty at Easter, they don’t sell otherwise. Farmer stopped using lobstah!
