Misleading Location Names

Ah, yes, except for the part of Kansas City that is in Kansas… :dubious:

There are 2 cities called Kansas City…KCMO and KCKS. Luckily, they are right next to each other or it would get really confusing!!!

Manhattan Beach is in Brooklyn. Manhattan College is in The Bronx.

How about Kansas City, Missouri? To make it worse, that wasn’t the original name - they stole it from the folks across the river.

Wichita County, Kansas, is nowhere near the city of Wichita. In fact, were it any further away, it’d be in Colorado.

The highest point in Kansas is called Mount Sunflower. It is actually just a slight rise in some guy’s pasture.

On edit: Aw crap, I missed the page turn!

You talkin’ about Nevada County, Missouri? At least the folks there pronounce it nuh-VAY-duh.

Which is judt fine according to the folks that live in nearby El-da-RAY-do Springs

Which also brings up - Peculiar, Missouri is a nice little unremarkable town that looks like most any other town its size.

The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought (mostly) on Breed’s Hill.

If by “the folks across the river” you mean the Kansa Indians, you’d be correct.

Folks in El Dorado, Kansas use the same pronunciation.

Correction: I just looked at a map, and Nevada, Mo. is a town, not a county. Sheesh. I’m going back to bed. . . .

Colombia University is in neither the Country or District of Colombia. It’s in New York.

Intercourse is in the southeast, close to Harrisburg, and Beaver Falls, Big Beaver and the like are near the Ohio border.

I’m not far from 2 small towns, Panic and Desire. If it wasn’t so remote I’d get a house on the road between them.

Similarly, Teddy Roosevelt was credited with charging up San Juan Hill, but his Rough Riders actually took nearby Kettle Hill.

And the Battle of Saratoga is in Stillwater, NY (though it’s in Saratoga County).

The Battle of Bennington wasn’t even in the same state as Bennington, VT – it was outside of Hoosic Falls, NY. It gets its name from the fact that Bennington was the objective of the British army. There’s a monument in Bennington commemorating the battle, and most people think that’s where it was fought, but it was the location of the granary that the British hoped to seize. (Very impressive battlefield, BTW).

Manhattan Beach is actually a suburb of Los Angeles. Try to figure that one out!

Nevada City is in California, not Nevada.

Kentucky is full of city-county mismatches. McKee is in Jackson County, while Jackson is in Breathitt County. Newport is in Campbell County, Campbellsville is in Taylor County, and Taylorsville is in Spencer County.

We also have West Liberty, which is way to the east of Liberty.

Up until recently, Bourbon County was dry while Christian County was wet.

Elsewhere, the University of South Florida is in Tampa, which is barely even in the southern half of the state. I did a job interview down there, and I couldn’t ever get anybody to explain this one to me.

WKRP was not in Cincinnati. It was in Dallas - Dallas, Georgia.

(That’s a real station I’m refering to. The producers of the TV show asked the FCC to deny the application for that call sign but were ignored.)

In Massachusetts, Nashova Valley Ski Resort and Nashoba Valley Winery are nowhere hear each other, which caused me much confusion one fall day as I was looking for the winery.

In Minnesota, West St. Paul is actually to the south of St. Paul

You have an excellent point there and I forgot to mention it. As a 10 year Boston area transplant from more rational parts of the country, I always refer to it as I-95 because, you know, it is a major interstate highway and has been for many decades. The danger comes when you finally give in and assume that “128” = I-95 which it doesn’t once you get out of the city. “128” actually describes an old route that doesn’t really exist anymore and spans multiple modern roads but is mentioned in passing on the “very limited and obscure” signage. Boston residents will tell you though that if you need this stuff explained to you then you really shouldn’t be driving here in the first place.

Nassau Point on Long Island is not in Nassau County.
