"misogynist"

To answer the latest straight dope question…

Men who hate women are called “misogynists”. Women who hate men are called “women”. Hope that clears it up a bit…

Try the veal, don’t forget to tip your waitresses, and drive safe! I’ll be here all week!

Original column is here: A misogynist hates women. What’s the word for someone who hates men?

This column has an apparent typo:

The root aner, of course, is Greek for “man.”

should read:

The root ander, of course, is Greek for “man.”

Greek, like Latin, is a highly inflected language. The basic word is “aner”, but most other forms begin “andr—”, and it is in the “andr—” form that it generally migrates to other languages.

You joined SDMB just to post a factually-inaccurate sexist joke that isn’t the least bit funny? Women can be misogynists, and men can be misandrists.

First, yes I did. Second, how is a joke ever factually acurate…? Third, funny is in the eye of the beholder.

Your final commentary is certainly true, but outside the scope of my “joke” (quotes since the humor of said joke has become an open question). :dubious:

Go make me some pie.

Speaking personally (not as moderator), my criterion for whether a joke is sexist is to tell the same joke with the genders switched. If the joke is still funny, then it’s not sexist. If the joke is no longer funny, then there’s a sexist elements. Thus, the joke would become “Women who hate men are called ‘misandrists.’ Men who hate women are called men.” That ain’t remotely funny, and so I deem the joke sexist.

I didn’t even get the “joke” until you guys cleared it up. Thanks!

Besides, the correct answer is “lesbians”.

(Hey, if you’re going to make a sexist joke, at least make it about sex.)

…and it’s NOT FUNNY.

Q: How many PMSing women does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: ROT IN HELL, BASTARD!

To CK Dexter Haven: Your reversal is actually at least as funny as my original joke (still an open question, I gather) but it doesn’t look funny to those of us who are men. In it’s original form, it didn’t look funny to those of us who are women. Most humor offends some, hurts some, and is hillarious to some. Sometimes all the same some.

And, sometimes it just falls on it’s ass. No risk, no gain.

It ain’t remotely funny, but it’s exactly as funny as the original, therefore, not sexist.

I thought it was funny–and I’m half female on my mother’s side…
