Misogyny and pop culture: don't yuck my yum! (Spoilers for the movie Poor Things)

I’m a Spice Weasel. I dispense spices. See here.

So he was referencing my username and I thought he was spying on my dinner.

:thinking:well, don’t know if that was entirely the meaning of that statement.

Tbh I did think that some of the responses to Eonwe in the Cafe Society thread came across as a bit snowflakey. Feathers seemed ruffled beyond what I would have expected.

And tbh, this:

reads a trifle snowflakey to me too.

I mean, AFAICT it’s no secret that in the pornography and sex work industries, there is in fact a lot of faux-feminist “empowerment” rhetoric used as a fig leaf for a lot of old-fashioned sexist exploitation. Honestly, if you’d asked me beforehand I would have guessed LHoD to be one of the more, excuse my French, “woke” feminist Dopers aware of the various nuances of this issue.

Is Beck inaccurately overgeneralizing when she claims that all such “empowerment” rhetoric used in all pornography and sex work contexts is “bullshit”? IMHO, yes.

Is her distrust really so massively far off base to deserve castigation for being “incredibly condescending and gross and stupid”? IMHO, probably not.

Like it or not, lots of young women have been pressured into commercial sexual activity at a level beyond what they’re comfortable with, by interested parties with profit and/or personal-gratification motives. Often such pressure includes superficially plausible appeals to sex positivity and feminist empowerment.

That does not in any way make sex positivity or feminist empowerment bad things—it doesn’t even make commercial sexual activity an inherently bad thing—but it does understandably make such rhetoric in such contexts somewhat suspect. I mean, is that really such a controversial take?

Like the time I was walking toward a store and it was 70 in November and I said to a guy, “Warm huh?” and he said, “we might need suntan lotion,” and I was like What? Oooh…

You say it much better.

My generalizing (calling it all bullshit)stems from what I’ve read. This is what I’m basing my opinion on.
Internet radical groups don’t appeal to me. Radical feminism doesn’t come off as a position I’d wanna take.

But they can do their own thing. Fine with me.

These young 20something flaming SJWs will have a new notion one day. They’ll see their older sisters have lived through these things with way too much regularity. And grew up to learn better.

OH NOES I’M MELTING!!!

What exactly do you think I’m criticizing her for? I’ll give you a hint: I’ve said it very explicitly about three times now. I’ll give you another hint: it’s not about overgeneralizing, although she’s doing that. I’ll give you a third hint: she did it again in the post right above this one.

I love when a man mansplains to me how to know when I’m being mansplained to.
Nice.

(Or is this man-gransplaining?)

You know what? Proceed, senator.

If I’m a little worked up on it, she spent awhile being an asshole in a thread about teachers, with roughly this logic:

  • Porn always hurts women.
  • Therefore women who are teachers and who do Onlyfans should have their careers destroyed.

In no way do I think her views are consistent or defensible. Her condescension toward younger folk who have reached different conclusions from hers are just shit icing on the shit cake.

I didn’t pit her at the time, because it was too much bother, and because I was 100% sure she would engage in exactly the sort of random shitflinging she’s engaging in now. But meh. Thread’s here, I’ll say what I’ve been thinking since then.

I’m not sure that any man who disagrees with a woman is mansplaining. I am intrigued that a movie has caused such a fuss. It must not be boring.

When people disagree with you, how often do you think it’s because you’re a woman, and how often is it because you’re a condescending self-absorbed dimwit?

No one can call me on this. You know why?
Because it’s my own fucking opinion.

I have a right to it.

You can call me condescending all you want. Until you’re a woman and have been treated like a dumb blond sex object you’ll never stop this holier-than-thou attitude that I’m just the little woman, “oh look how cute, she has an opinion” crap.
I’m not gonna back off my generalizing that all sex work and pornography is terrible. The 2% that had a good experience, well good for them. That is not the norm.

Outside your lizard, tongue hanging out brain you might realize it’s true.

Pornography is for men, made for men, overwhelming viewed by men. To their detriment and mine, as a woman.

What you still in 3rd grade? Nice one.

You need to grow out of name calling.

It is general practice to give a cite when you are quoting a Trump speech.

Is lizard brain name calling?

Has he ever said notion?

In this the context of the thread this is intentionally very funny. After all it is @Eonwe who felt the gender of the book author, the screenwriter, and the director was highly significant to their having “confirmed” in their sarcastic post that this was a male gaze oriented misogynistic movie.

First that is not what happened, as has been covered repeatedly.

Hell even this OP is like their plot summary of the movie: completely inaccurate. The person who ported the comment bringing up the POV that the movie was more a male fantasy and misogynistic than feminist was … me. I was pointed to the comment in a different thread and brought into that thread to have it discussed. Yes I disagreed with it, but I did not shoot down discussion of it. And it was being discussed by those who had seen the movie each bringing to the table things from the movie that they felt supported their take. @Eonwe then dumps sarcastic crap into the discussion. Without having seen it but feeling strongly that because someone spoon fed them a teaspoon perspective that meeshed with their pre existing agenda they were as fully informed as those who saw it. Yeah a threadshit to me. And charges me with shutting down any consideration of the perspective just because I don’t see it in the movie as someone who saw it.

Now you can disagree with that, but making a charge of threadshit is too rude for The Pit? Give me a break.

Whew. I was afraid it was much ruder than that in the context of a porn discussion!

Well, this thread at least got me to watch Everything Everywhere All At Once. How did I completely miss this one? What a romp! Haven’t had this much fun watching a movie in awhile. Not sure I quite understood it all on one view, but what a ride!

Oh that one I recommended to everyone even though it was very weird! It was the first movie my wife and I saw after covid lockdowns!

Oops, that was entirely unintentional. I just thought “cuminsplaining” sounded pleasing.

It didn’t click with me the first time, but it occurs to me that it’s probably a good workout movie, so I think I’m going to put it on again now, it’s a big cardio day.
