I saw it recently, with some younger friends who had never seen it. It’s a period piece. A lot of what was groundbreaking in its time is ordinary today. I had to translate a little (“that was shocking back in the 80s”). But it holds up.
Oh, and the younger friends were mostly trans. That’s probably relevant. No one said, “oh my God, this is so cringe” or anything.
Yep, I went with a friend and we are both trans, and the audience was overwhelmingly queer. Nothing cringe for us.
This is very common. They were doing that back in the 80s and ever since that I have seen.
Also, the audience dancing in the aisle to Time Warp.
Back in the 80s we also brought toast, rice, lighters, squirt guns, newspapers and whatnot. That is not allowed where I see it anymore which is a bummer (but I get it).
Yeah, we had to pay $5 for a bag of props we could use. Like a newspaper, toilet paper, a small led light (instead of a lighter), and so forth.

I went in the early 00s with my husband and our college friends. We dressed my husband in a black slip with a ladies’ hairbow. He’s a trooper.
It was a fun night. I didn’t really connect with it, but I understand why people did/do. Most of my friends in high school were LGBTQ and they were obsessed.

Heh, I first saw it when it was first run before all the hoopla. IIRC it disappeared from theaters pretty quickly and only somewhat later built an audience.
I had planned to see the stage play when it was staged here in L.A., but I never got my butt in gear to go before it closed.
