Missing cat... Any hope?

Thank goodness! Pet her for me!

Glad to hear your cat’s back. Give her a hug for me.

Glad to hear you found her. Give her a cuddle for me!

Hang on to your hopes–because it is definitely possible. I had a cat
who came home after 3 weeks!

A neutered male, strictly indoor cat. But a very curuious creature, who loved to run out into the hallway of my apartment building. One night he slipped out without me seeing him.

Then one day 3 weeks later, like a scene in a Walt Disney movie for kids: I heard a mew outside the door—of my 4th floor apartment! He had found his way home, with sores on the pads of his feet that looked like he must have walked many many miles. He ate hungrily, then jumped up on his favorite couch, and life went on like nothing had happened.

I can’t believe I came across this thread.

My little Gypsy, my 10 month old constant companion, went missing 4 days ago. I knew when she didn’t come the minute I called her I was in trouble. Her and I are literally inseparable.

I’m beyond distraught.

I’ve done the searching and calling, I’ve talked to the neighbors that are home(hoiday weekend), I have the numbers of the dog officer and some local vets but I can’t call until Tuesday because of the holiday…

I didn’t really start to panic until late friday as I’ve always had cats, have 6 now, and realise sometimes they just wanna do what they wanna do. But she’s still not home, and my heart is breaking.

Her appointment to be neutered is Wedsnesday… :frowning:

Maybe you guys wouldn’t mind passing some of those good vibes along that worked so well for MissBHaven. I’m glad your kitty came home.

Good to hear you got her back. Ages and ages ago my family had one escape from a kennel where he was being boarded while we vacationed. He was gone for months. We frequently searched the area where he’d disappeared and my father even put out a live-trap for him, but there was no sign of him. (In the search my father also had a close encounter with a skunk, which fortunately did not result in any perfumery.) In the winter, when we’d assumed he was gone for good, he turned up back at the kennel and they grabbed him and called us. He was a bit on the thin side but recovered and lived to be 17, and after that instead of using a kennel we just had neighbors come over to take care of the cats when we vacationed.

We live out in the sticks and have nearly always had outdoor cats. Everybody gets food and vet care (including neutering) and as much affection as they will accept, although most have been very standoffish. None have shown any interest in coming in the house; they seem scared of it, having been outside all their lives. (Fine with us, as we don’t want house cats anyway.) Our population fluctuates, most recently anywhere from 3 to 7; the 7 was our max when we had a semi-wild mama cat and the remnants of the two litters she had before we could catch and spay her, and we currently have 3. Cats go away, cats return, extra cats show up. Sometimes they’re gone for six months or a year, and then show up one day as if they were never gone at all.

((((Witch))))

Gypsy - and you - are both in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you find her soon.

And MissbHaven – glad you got your girl back. I can only imagine how I would feel if my own fine cat, Boo, went missing.

Here’s to all the missing animals out there: may you make it safely home to the laps and beds of those who love you.

I was afraid to open this thread, afraid of what might have happened.

I’m so sorry Peach, to hear about your kitty. And I hope Gypsy comes back home to you, Witch.

It is great that your kitty came home, MissB!

If one of mine disappeared I would lose my mind. I would need a padded cell and a tranquilizer dart. They are my children. They are more dear to me than children would be, because I did not have to push them out of any body orifice.

Still no sign of her.

I feel like every ounce of hope has been squeezed out of me.

I am glad to hear your kitty came home MissBHaven.

Witch I am sorry to hear about your kitty. Don’t give up hope. My friend had a cat that took off for a month and it came back. You just never know. Hang in there.

Hang in there, we are thinking about you here, hoping for the best.

Hugs to you

Have faith, Witch!!

10 long months, and she came back fine. My son had begged for a cat for years before we finally got one, having always been a ‘dog person’ I was a bit disconcerted on what to do with a kitten. The kitten we adopted was the most affectionate and lovable purr machine ever created. She was the tiniest runt of the litter and used to go freely in and out of a front window left open just for that reason, but always returned in less than an hour.

One day, she just didn’t. We were undergoing some construction so we didn’t know if the contractors had freaked her out, or maybe even one had been mean to her, she was just gone. We put up signs, looked for traces of roadkill, talked to the neighbors…nothing. Many tears ensued when after 3 months I put away the cat toys and dishes and no one wanted to talk about a replacement pet.

Almost a year later, my son opens the front door and there’s a smallish cat on the porch. We weren’t immediately sure if she was the same one, but after a bit of coaxing she came right inside. Stalked about the house with an entirely bemused attitude (post construction, walls had been moved, new furniture, new carpeting, new paint-quite a difference) then jumped up into a welcoming lap and hasn’t left since!

I am convinced that somehow she knew her appt to get fixed was the day following her disappearance, somehow. She obviously was taken in by someone, she showed no signs of living wild and had gained some interesting new habits like hopping on the kitchen counter during dinner prep, but it all worked out just fine in the end.

I hope yours comes home to you soon, don’t give up hope!

Hang in there, Witch. My Punky was missing for 2 days this week. I don’t know where he was, or what happened to him, but he came home. He has very sore feet, for some reason, but he’s home! I was so sure he was dead. Very relieved.

Is there a Korean restaurant in your town?

Shep, first the F-18 remark, now this. I advise you to show a little tact, if you value your posting privileges.

I can relate! Don’t give up yet!!! I felt so much better after reading everyone else’s success stories & knowing everyone was pulling for us. We are sending good thoughts your way!

I keep re-reading this thread hoping that I’ll be one of the lucky ones too. But nothing yet. I miss her so much.

Shep, someday you will be hurting and someone will revel in your pain. Because karma is a bitch like that.

Witch, have you called all the shelters in the Boston area to report her as missing? Just off the top of my head, you should definitely call the following:

City of Boston Animal Shelter (located in Roslindale) - 617-635-1800
Animal Rescue League (in Boston) - 617-426-9170
MSPCA (in Jamaica Plain) - 617-522-7400
Ellen Gifford Sheltering Home (in Brighton) - 617-787-8872

Also, put up signs at every vet office within at least 5 miles. Obviously, also all around your neighborhood. Don’t just call shelters close to your house - at mine, we get cats that were found 25 miles or more away, but the people who found the cat live near my shelter (and far from where they actually found it), so they bring it to us.

When you do find her, you might want to get her microchipped - almost every shelter will have a scanner that can read the chip and the it is very easy to find you. It’s worth every penny. The City of Boston Shelter does it for about $15; same with the Animal Rescue League. A private vet can do it too but it’s usually more expensive, as they charge for doing it - whereas the CoBS and ARL do not; they just charge for the fee that the chip company charges.

I hope she comes back to you. I’d die if any of my babies disappeared. :frowning:

Hiya missbunny,
I’ve called the kennels and vets around here, I actually live in Weymouth now which is about 15 miles south of Boston…no luck, but they are posting her info for me at their offices.
I’ve got my signs up in the neighborhood, but better yet, I’ve alerted all the neighborhood kids. All my cats are very friendly, and all the kids come over to play with them, and know my cats.
Both the vets offices have suggested she may have gone into heat, but have also said that may NOT be the case either. I know they want to throw out what very well could be the case, without giving me false hope :frowning:
