O.K., I’m new here so please be kind. Earlier this week I was watching T.V. with my husband and they had a sex scene. No big deal, you see it all the time, but I realized something. Whenever I see a sex scene on T.V. and most of the time in the movies, it is in the missonary position. What gives? Is it easier to hide T&A using that position? Are the actors more comfortable with it? Any ideas guys?
Hi, I’m sort of new, so I’ll be kind…I don’t know about the rest of them.
Wouldn’t any other position constitute pornography in our rather conservative culture? (I’m assuming you mean American TV/Hollywood Movies).
Eh, WAG here, for television. I think probably (a) “Is it easier to hide T&A using that position?” is the best response. If you have the guy on top, he can be bare-chested and not offend anybody, and he’s on top of her breasts, so you can’t really see them, either. What show was it? Was it on cable or broadcast? Cable has different standards for what constitutes pornography.
And think about what you actually saw. Could you really see that the actress was bare-chested, too, or was the whole scene just sort of implied, with careful camera work, say, shooting them from above or behind the bed, so you can see his bare back on top of her, and you sort of assume that she’s naked, too.
Selling the sizzle, not the steak…
P.S. I dunno what movies you’re talking about, but the last few movies I saw, I had the impression the director said, “Okay, no more missionary position, let’s get DOWN!”
It has nothing to do with hiding T&A. Doggie style would be better suited for that!
Its basically a matter of pushing the boundaries. 40 or 50 years ago you couldn’t show a sex scene in a movie at all, missionary or not. Then gradually you could. Same for TV, only television is about half a century behind the movies. 15 or 20 years ago TV didn’t show sex scenes either. Now they do, but only in the missionary position. It may sound silly, but anything beyond missionary is much more sexual as far as TV and film are concerned. Just having the woman on top is much more sexually charged. And doggie style? How do you know they’re not doing, ahem, something else?
Could it simply be that missionary is the most common sexual position?
I can think of quite a few movies that have shown non-missionary sex scenes, missionary is simply more prevalent.
I think a nice blend of the above ideas makes sense. It also gives you a basis from which to vary when you want to use the sex scenes as a tool for story development. A wild and crazy sex scene can actually take away from a story, and it can certainly take away sponsors and others who might like to remain a little mainstream.
You just made me think of the American Beauty scene with the wife and her lover going at it … does it for me
Also, since the missionary is the most common, showing another position could imply a kinkiness to the relationship that the story doesn’t warrant. When all you want to do is show the two people have sex together, other positions would imply more than that.
…any other position than Missionary is considered kinky???
<-------- putting trapeeze back into altar, padlocking, etc… jeez. JUST when life was getting interesting…
