Bear in mind, Israel is no larger than New Jersey. Three or four nuke-strikes should be enough to wipe it out quite thoroughly. Of course, that would also kill all the Palestinians.
Oh gods…not again!!! See, this is why I won’t vote for Romney. I can’t take another 4-8 years of frantic 'dopers wringing their hands and predicting that THIS time we are going to invade Iran for sure!
He deserves it now though..
Don’t bother. The translation error, actually misquote, has been known and discussed for years. No matter how often what Ahmadinejad actually said is expressed, those who have worked themselves into a lather over Iran continue to not only cling to and erroneously cite the misquote as real, but twist themselves into pretzels to defend it when corrected.
Thanks for the translation. But this is supposed to make me feel better?
“the Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.”
I don’t have a position on whether or not the correct quote should make anyone feel better. However, I do believe it is important to be accurate, especially when imputing motives to a person or entity based, in no small measure, on something that was ostensibly explicitly expressed.
Saying a regime must vanish from the pages of time is quite a far cry from saying that an entire country must be wiped off the map, regardless of one’s position on whether or not Iran is planning, or in the process of, development of nuclear weapons.
I disagree, both phrases being metaphors, but thanks again for the translation.
Google “Iraq” and “regime change.” It is not a metaphor, but neither is it a call to genocide or land-glassing.
You lost me. Are we talking about a Romney excuse to attack Iran?
Not to belabor the point, and in apology for the continued hijack of the thread, but who’s determined that one is a metaphor for the other? Did anyone in an official capacity in Iran say “Yes, of course the idiom ‘wipe from the map’ doesn’t exist in any of Iran’s recognized languages, but you know what Ahmadinejad really meant, wink, wink,” or are some of us simply projecting?
I meant that neither is intended to be taken literally, not that one is a metaphor for the other.
I meant that “Saying a regime must vanish from the pages of time” is not a metaphor. Hyperbole, perhaps.
Okay, thanks again.
Israel does not need approval or support from Romney Obama or anyone else. They will protect their interests as any sovereign state should. Sorry to say it-for the no more wars crowd- but odds are an attack is coming in the next couple of months whether you want it or not.
This is true. And if Israel chooses to attack unilaterally, America, which is also a sovriegn state, is not in any way compelled to help them, or to help them avoid the consequences of the attack.
I imagine we will, though.
Let’s hope the testosterone poisoning will pass, and some agreement can be reached with Oran.
