Mixing drinks and the order of beverage addition

Suppose I’m mixing beverages A and B together, and the recipe calls for a larger quantity of A than B. If I want to achieve as homogeneous a mixture as possible without stirring, which should I add first? Or does it matter?

Add the alcoholic one first, so you don’t forget it (trust me, it happens, I used to be a bartender), and so that you can make your marks on the glass fairly consistent. Also, if you add the smaller quantity one first, there will be more turbulence and eddy currents in the glass do simply to a higher flow quantity and time allowed to mix. The exception is a highly viscous liquid (or powder) that would otherwise stick to the bottom of the glass. In that case, add 1/3 of the less viscous, then the entire quantity of highly viscous, and finally the rest of the less viscous.

Why are you not stirring? The only reasons I know of not to stir are 1) you are making a layered drink, which you’re not because you want it homogeneous and 2) You’re adding something carbonated, in which case you don’t want to stir too much because you don’t want to make it flat.

Perhaps it’s Christmas Eve.

I can understand Santo Rugger’s reason of not forgetting the booze. However, starting with the liquor tends to quick-melt the ice and coat the pieces with booze. At home, I prefer to put in a few ounces of mixer, then the booze, then fill it up with the mixer.

In practice, most bartenders I’ve seen pour both at once.

At home, my little dog begs for the ice cubes when I’m done with them. If there’s any sense to my order of pouring, she probably gets a little less bourbon that way.

Want to minimize the number things to clean up.

So I’m still unclear about this. Let’s say I’m mixing orange juice and soda water (my latest obsession). I use about 1 part OJ and 2 parts soda water. What should I do to achieve a homogeneous mixture without stirring?

is there ice? drop it in last and poke down with yer finger

Put in the OJ first, then pour the soda on one side of the glass (not “down the side”) to best get the liquids circulating.

Not if the ice is cold enough. If you’ve got enough latent heat, the ice will barely melt at all. Not sure what you mean by coating the ice with booze, though?

:stuck_out_tongue:

for the perfect rum and coke I dump a tray of small ice cubes in a big tiki glass, add rum until the ice is just about to float, then dump a full can of coke into the glass at a fast pour, comes out perfect…just dont be afraid to pour it fast and it will mix just fine

When do I put in the soda water?

Umm? You don’t?? By definition, my method produces orange juice that is perfectly mixed. :stuck_out_tongue:
:smack:

I don’t know, the first few sips taste like straight orange juice to me.
