My laptop has, apparently, 3 memory slots. I took the back off and found and removed 1 stick of: 4GB 204p PC3-12800 CL11 8c 512x8 DDR3-1600 1Rx8 1.35V SODIMM RFB, Samsung, DCI, M471B5173QH0-YK0
What I have to put in is: Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x8GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL9 1024Meg x 64 1.35V
I took out the Samsung, put the Crucial in, and now my computer is saying I have 20GB of memory installed, which means there must be what I assume is an identical 4GB Samsung stick somewhere that I can’t see. It’s not under anything that comes out very easily (either hard drive or the battery) and I’m not seeing it anywhere else.
In any case, if I can’t find that other stick, as long as it works, does it really make that much difference? Am I hurting anything?
Many laptops have built in RAM. As the manufacturer does not intend to allow you to replace it and the same type would probably be difficult to find, this is an intended feature, and you’ll be fine.
That isn’t really mixing RAM and I agree that it will be fine. It is the DDR3-1600 that is important. It shouldn’t matter who made it as long as those values match and they do in this case. Truly mixing RAM is when you try to combine RAM with fundamentally different speeds or specifications. It may or may not work but it isn’t good.
If you search the manufacturer’s website or the internet, there should be documentation somewhere that will tell you where the memory slots are located.
It’s Sager (Clevo). I actually did look up the manual, and it was no help whatsoever.
But as long as it doesn’t matter, it’s not that important. It may well be soldered onto the motherboard or under the keyboard, neither of which are things I’m going to mess around with.
