MKV format, nobody fucking cares!

So since we are now at the nice place where even the DVD player you can buy at the grocery store will play .avi format video files burned to a dvd-r the pirate scene decides they are moving on from that and moving to .mkv which not one thing on earth plays besides VLC player.

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK GUYS?!

Three weeks now Doctor Who has only been released in .mkv! It is becoming common to only rip movies in .mkv from Blueray sources!

Someone needs to travel back in time and kill the guy that invented .mkv format!

You can play files in .mkv format in other players, you just need to have the right codecs installed.

P.S. A pitting admitting to piracy in the OP might not go like you expected.

Also:

And the appeal is that it is a non-proprietary and open-standards format.

Yea and so is FLAC, how many things do you have that play FLAC?

Meanwhile everyone’s shoes probably play mp3s by now.
*I’m very well aware of FLAC’s superior features, it doesn’t change the fact that it is unsupported while every alarm clock sold in walmart plays mp3s.

MKV containers allow nice things such as embedded subtitles and multiple audio tracks among other things. At this point I would question why you would rip something to anything else. And the reason blu-ray rips come as mkv is that the best tool for riping them is mkv only (MakeMKV).

Now, quit fucking bitching about something you’re getting for free you over-entitled parasitic twat. And get with the 21st century! What sort of inbred cretin downloads torrents and then burns them to dvd in this day and age?

That was an example of how widespread .avi support has become, that even shit any bumpkin can buy at the grocery plays it fine.

I sir am insulted you think I burn TV episodes to a dvdr to watch on a dvd player!

I actually put it on a sdcard and watch it on a no brand $20 buck media player from China.

Embedded subtitles=nobody cares, even the no name “HD media player” I have supports subtitles in a .txt file as long as it has the same file name as the video file, ditto for the two DVD players we have. Oh wow two files instead of one, ooooo scary!

Multiple audio tracks=nobody cares, .avi has long supported this in fact I have several with multiple tracks but the problem is hardware players nearly always choke on these. The simple fact is aside from hardcore anime fans no one cares, purists will watch with subtitles and the rest dubbed. I can’t believe <I> am saying this but if you want to hear director commentary BUY THE DAMN DVD/BLURAY!

The move to .mkv has done nothing but make numerous hardware players and handheld media players useless. I had a cheap android tablet, played .avi flawlessly but stuttered when playing .mkv.

Fuck .mkv!

MKV is superiour technology. Last week I learned that whores are fashion leaders. And now software pirates are technology leaders. What next.

MKV. When you care enough to pirate the very best.

The problem isn’t the codec, the problem is that you’re trying to play a blu-ray rip on a shitty tablet. Doesn’t matter what container you use if the device doesn’t have the horsepower to unpack the bits.

Besides, in my experience there’s low-def <800MB versions of everything that are still in .avi format if you don’t want to deal with it. Want high-def and don’t want to pay for it? .mkv is where it’s at. Plus embedded subtitles are awesome.

Shark007 codec pack for windows is awesome for making .mkvs just work.

The .avi and .mkv files were not only in a similar size but the exact same def and aspect ratio, .mkv just seems to take more horsepower to unpack all else being equal. Even episodes of Adventure Time obviously recorded off television choked and stuttered(funny thing is we have DirecTV with both Cartoon Network and BBCamerica yet I am addicted to torrents, I can’t stand watching stuff that isn’t a file)

I’m not downloading those INSANE 6 gig blu ray .mkvs.

Don’t even get me started on all those “world’s tiniest violin” tracks in .ogg format!

I want to explain that I am fairly new to the world of downloading video files and burning DVDs and there is plenty about it that I don’t understand. In particular …

In this thread, someone said, “… A pitting admitting to piracy in the OP might not go like you expected.”.

As I understand it, any mention of piracy in any forum on this board is a huge no-no and will result in very serious penalties up to and including banning. However, there seems to be some disagreement about this. Do I misunderstand the policy? I don’t understand how people can admit to piracy in this thread without expecting serious negative consequences.

There is something else I don’t understand and would like to know.

Why are there no DVD players that can load multiple DVDs in a kind of carousel? When CD players were in vogue, there were plenty of CD-players for home stereos that could load 5 or 6 CDs at once so that you could play all or parts of them all without having to bother with changing CDs. I would love to be able to buy a DVD player that enabled me to load several DVDs at once so that I don’t have to keep getting up to change the DVD.

Some of you may wonder why I would want that given that today DVD players are on the way out since people can use HDMI to play media files directly from their PCs to their TVs. The reason is that I have a large collection of video files in an older format from years gone by and it would be really great if I could load 5 or 6 of them at once into a carousel-type DVD player and then play portions of any or all of them without having to keep getting up and changing disks.

By the way, using a video card that supports HDMI and a HDMI cable, I can play most any video file using most any player with no problems and with no need to burn any DVDs. I can control the playback using a wireless keyboard and mouse.

It took me a long time to figure out how to put all the components together. But I feel that I have huge convenience and flexibility using HDMI and a wireless keyboard and/or mouse.

I have been trying to achieve the condition for about a year now where I can be in bed and access any number of video files and play them back without having to get up and change disks in a DVD player or get up and access my PC. It took a long time for me to figure out how to do this, but it is a wonderful convenience to avoid getting up every few minutes to adjust my PC or to change disks in a DVD player.

Some people may question what my previous post has to do with the thread topic - namely .MKV files.

The point is that using a video card that suports HDMI and an HDMI cable, I can play .MKV files with most any player directly to my TV without any need for any DVDs and without any serious problems. I can be in bed and I don’t need any remote control device to play videos as I can use a wireless keyboard to control my PC without any need to keep running back and forth to my PC.

I’m not suggesting that I can do these things where other people can not. I’m sure other people here have just as much - if not more - flexibility than I do.

My point is simply that .MKV files do not represent any real problem so far as I can tell.

There are, I own one. It’s in storage somewhere.

My primary disc player is a Sony 5-Disc changer. I love that thing. It even has ‘bookmark’ functionality to remember where you last stopped watching a DVD, for multiple DVDs at once.

Maybe he means the kind with polka-dot horsies that move up and down? Those are more rare.

If only there were some way to take a video that was in a format you didn’t want it to be in and convert it to the one of your choosing.

Pain in the ass, even on a fast PC it takes a shitload of time.
