MLB All Palindrome Team

For a while I’ve been trying to assemble my all palindrome lineup. Can you help?

Here’s who I have so far:

1B: ?
2B: ?
SS: ?
3B: Toby Harrah
C: ?
LF: Dick Nen
CF: ?
RF: ?
SP: Dave Otto
RP: Robb Nen

The outfielders can shift around as needed, I suppose. This is of critical importance. Please help.

Your catcher could be Mark Salas. If you move Harrah to short, Eddie Kazak played third.

That’s all I have. If first names were allowed this would be easy, because there’s been a hundred guys named Bob.

1B Dick Nen
2B Eddie Kazak
C Mark Salas

Check this site. I’m not sure you’re going to be able to fill out your roster.

Oh that’s a bummer. But certainly in the last 14 years there must be many more palindromic players, right?

How did I forget Salas. What kind of Twin fan am I.

Not anyone whose primary position was in the outfield, at least.

N/M

Dean Anna was a middle infielder who spent a little time with the Yankees and less with the Cardinals. He’d be a possibility.

Or put him in the outfield, he had quite a few games there in the minors.

You could put Truck Hannah at catcher and move Salas to the corner outfield. Hannah once caught a game pitched by Babe Ruth.

Awesome. Getting closer. OK, here’s what we have:

1B: Dick Nen (played LF for 10 minutes in '67 so could move him to the outfield if needed)
2B: Dean Anna
SS: Toby Harrah (he might also have to manage the team)
3B: Eddie Kazak
C: Truck Hannah
LF: Mark Salas (he played there a little)
CF: ?
RF: ?
SP: Dave Otto
RP: Robb Nen

A complete infield! Just need two more…

I think this should be called “Da Bad” baseball team.

If we allow nicknames* then we can fill the CF position with:

Rein Red, Bob

*A nickname I *just *came up with

Good news, I found us a first baseman. Dick Nen has to go back to left field. Salas will take right field (let’s all hope not much gets hit out there).

I give you the man who played 17 games for the Red Sox in 1932–Johnny Reder!

1B: Johnny Reder
2B: Dean Anna
SS: Toby Harrah (he might also have to manage the team)
3B: Eddie Kazak
C: Truck Hannah
LF: Dick Nen
CF: ?
RF: Mark Salas
SP: Dave Otto
RP: Robb Nen

One left… Only CF, no big deal.

Two Washington Senators! I am so proud!

I’m fairly sure the only guys left on the all-time roster not yet named are all pitchers: Fernando Salas, Marino Salas, Juan Salas and Cody Ege.

Juan Salas is the only one of them who ever played a position other than pitcher in the minors… he was converted from a position player, actually. He mostly played third base but he also logged some games at second base, short and right field.

What? You don’t like my inspired rules-torturing attempt to put Bob Dernier at CF?

I just want to say sometimes I am amazed at how Dopers come through. Who would have thunk you could do this?

You might have to cheat and put Alejandro De Aza in center.

Sheesh we’re getting a little thin here, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

OK, Juan Salas. Look at you, gotta be center field.

They said in 2005 that it couldn’t be done but here’s our starting lineup:

1B: Johnny Reder
2B: Dean Anna
SS/MGR: Toby Harrah
3B: Eddie Kazak
C: Truck Hannah
LF: Dick Nen
CF: Juan Salas (last played outfield in double A, yikes)
RF: Mark Salas
SP: Dave Otto (hope you can coax some grounders)
RP: Robb Nen

Nice!

The rest of the gang (Bob Dernier and his nickname, Alejandro De Aza, Russ Van Atta, Wally Pipp and so on) can all report to the farm club until they can shave off a letter or two.
