But who else was available? Who should Moreno have bought instead in his effort to buy a World Series trophy? The “investment” was short-term, and always though of as one. It was not at all unreasonable to expect Hamilton to be able to play at a highly productive level for another year or two at least, enough to put them over the top. The out years of the contract? So what? There’d have been a helluva good time in the meanwhile. Sports is about winning, and winning right now - especially if you’re an owner who is not financially constrained.
Interesting that ESPN didn’t demand to make the Red Sox game tonight a night game and shower it with endless Boston Strong and marathon bombing ceremonies. They’re not even showing a Wednesday night game
And they’ve been losing, and losing quite a lot. So I guess Moreno was ill-advised.
Other factors do come into play, but it’s still much easier to win with talent than without it.
Ah, rats, nobody’s perfect. (re: Royals)
Dodgers get their first sweep of the year taking 3 of 3 from the Mariners. Slightly bittersweet, as it involved an alumnus of my school getting lit up as the starting pitcher for Seattle.
Make up your mind. Yesterday, you were complaining about the comebacks. So last night, we didn’t need a comeback. You’re welcome!
Oh the difference a few days makes ;).
Was a nice sweep by the Mets. D’Arnaud is finally hitting as folks expected him too.

… I’m happy Puig has gotten into a groove - he gets flighty when he over-thinks things. Now that he has some hits under his belt he’ll settle down and advance the runner…/QUOTE]
Well, no, he won’t, which is why I hope Donny figures out Puig is never gonna be a #2 guy. He likes swinging hard way too much to give up at bats.
The Giants are taking advantage of the new rule, secretly instituted by Bud Selig as he was walking out of the Commissioner’s Office, stating that the defending World Series champions don’t have to count the first 10 games of the season.
At least, that’s what I’m telling myself…because any other reality is just too despairing to contemplate.
Never fear – you’re only 3.5 games out of the wildcard right now…
The Josh Hamilton vs the Angels battle gets more interesting as Josh Hamilton lists his house for sale in California.
Angels' Josh Hamilton lists Newport mansion for sale at $16.5 million.
I wonder how well stocked the wine cellar is?
The 12 day minimum to prevent this season from qualifying toward free agency is past, and suddenly Kris Barker, Yasmany Tomas, and shortly Rusney Castillo and Blake Swihart and others are suddenly and simultaneously now ready for the majors.
Stupid, stupid rule, and I would expect it to get fixed in the next CBA.
Yeah, stupid rule, and GMs like Theo Epstein also treat everyone like idiots by lying about it.
Epstein was asked (i assume the reporter was being facetious) what the Cubs had learned about Kris Bryant in his ten-game minors stint that they didn’t know on opening day. According to Epstein, Kris Bryant’s callup was the result of some unfortunate recent injuries to other third basemen, and “it’s just nice to have someone like Kris Bryant, when the need arises, you can go down and get a guy like that.”
Look, asshole, you know that’s bullshit, the reporter knows that’s bullshit, and everyone watching the broadcast knows that’s bullshit. He wasn’t sent down because you needed him to work out more in the minors. He wasn’t called up because of injuries. You did all of this for financial reasons. Those reasons, given the current CBA, were sound and logical financial reasons, but don’t blow smoke up our ass about them. Just be honest and say that you wanted to ensure that you control one of the best young prospects in the game for as long as possible before losing him to free agency.
And Kris Bryant played one game, struck out three times, and got booed and told he sucks.
When did Cubs fans get as stupid as the number North East fans?
Did this 12-day rule exist in the past? I don’t remember ever hearing about it before, but now all of a sudden April 17 is a national holiday, Call Up the Guys You Always Wanted but Couldn’t Afford to Lose in 2021 Day.
IIRC, the Rays did this with Evan Longoria in his rookie season.
Btw, I am recalling all the posters trying to advocate that the Yankees just drop A-Rod… well, it looks like they are probably glad they didn’t do that ;).
So the Royals have gotten hit by a pitch 13 times (a few of which were intentional) all season, and no one’s been ejected. Last night Ventura retaliates against Lawrie for a stupid cleats-high slide on Escobar with no chance for a double play the night before, and he gets run out immediately. I know there was likely a warning from the ump to even begin the game, but it just kind of pisses me off.
Josh Hamilton filed for divorce back in February, around the same time he allegedly relapsed as well as finally had his surgery. His wife is a horrible woman, so getting away from her will be a good thing.
It is interesting that both the house sale and the divorce filing comes out this weekend. Investigative journalism or leaks from the Angels?
