The Rangers lost again last night with Lee on the mound. I’m not sure what the problem is, but he always seems to have one inning where he loses command of his pitches a bit and that results (like it did last night) in runs given up. We can’t get swept by the Rays.
In other news, Nellie Cruz is on the DL and Michael Young has a stiff neck. We really need to get all our guys healthy.
They’re trying to get out of his contract, claiming his injury was not baseball related. They could have an extra eleven million to play with next year.
I notice the other companies haven’t caved yet. Frankly, I hope they don’t. I’ll hate missing 20+ games this year, but if they cave we’ll miss more next year when Rogers creates SportsNet Super Duper.
Just for fun I looked up the listings for regular Sportsnet. As near as I can tell, out of every 24 hours of programming, maybe 5 hours a day is actually live sports. So they’re not even lying effectively when they say “oh, gosh, we need another channel for all the live sports we’re showing.”
Nice 1-0 win by the Padres tonight. They’re now half-way through their 10-game road trip, and are 4-1 on the trip so far. With the Giants’ loss, San Diego’s lead in the West is now up to 5 games.
The Padres now have five 1-0 victories this year, and have shut out the opposition on 15 occasions.
The Rangers got trounced last night 10 - 1 by the Rays. They need to get their pitching act together (I’m looking at you, Tommy “Big Game” Hunter) and stop fooling around. At least Vlad got a hit or two. I’m just not looking forward to another game tonight, especially if this is a preview of the playoffs. < sigh >
That’s been a brutal schedule for the Rangers the past week. They’ve had games with the Yankees and Red Sox at home in the heat and then flying to Tampa right after a game in 104 degree weather on Sunday.
And now it looks like the Rangers are about to drop another one to the Rays.
The AL Central has really been shaken up in the last month or so. On July 10, gonzomax posted a comment that the “Minnesota Twits [sic] are fading fast.” Since then, the Twits are 24-8 and now have a 4-game lead in the division, while the Tigers are 10-24 and have gone from having a 4-game lead to being 11 games back. Wonder if that’s why we haven’t seen gonzo in this thread.
I hadn’t been paying attention to the Tigers until I was checking the standing last night and saw they had dropped below .500. Really a swift collapse.
I’m curious as to why Buck wasn’t traded before the deadline when one considers he’s not signed for next year, was very likely at the apex of his value on July 31, and will probably get (and deserves) a hefty pay hike if they do try to retain him. Why not deal Buck to someone who needs catching - someone always does - and let Molina break in Arencibia in 2011?
Note that I am assuming the Jays don’t have an option for 2011; I cannot find any evidence they do.
While the** Reds** may have been padding their record by feasting on the craptastic teams in the NL Central like Pittsburgh, Chi Cubs, Sinking Fastros and the Brewers (while simultaneously struggling some with better than .500 teams), the good news is that while the Cardinals seem to get the best of the **Reds **more often than not head-to-head, they can’t seem to take care of the crappy teams!
So now the Reds are 2.5 games ahead after another Cardinal loss to the Brewers and are looking to up that lead by beating the woeful D-Backs again.
Hmm. The Mariners have won four consecutive series, three of them since the departure of Don Wakamatsu. And Matt Tuiasosopo hit 3-run homers in consecutive at-bats - his final AB in Tuesday’s game and his first AB in Wednesday’s game.
It’s been an incredible flip flop there, and especially within a month, to have that big of a swing is crazy. The Tigers tend to swoon in the second half anyways, but with the injuries, it’s accelerated and emphasized.
