MLB: August 2017

Exactly. He’s done.
He’s the 7th best outfielder on the team.

Maybe more wait

Kike
Joc
Cody
Puig
Granderson
Taylor

Yeah 7th best.

It’s nice to have depth, but where do you play him? When do you?

6th best. Pederson just got optioned to Oklahoma City.

MLB network says that Yu Darvish has a back issue, and may be headed to the DL.

Well that answers some questions.

I will gladly take that bet. Barring a setback injury, Ethier will appear for the Dodgers in a major league game in September (or sooner). Loser buys the winner a Dodger Dog at Game 1 of the World Series.

Dodger Dogs are excellent, but they won’t serve them at Wrigley for game one and no ketchup is allowed on a hot dog.

I don’t think I can wait another 71 years for a hot dog! :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the Stros problem is health. If they can get their studs back by early September, they’ll be fine. There’s no rush either, given their cushion.

On that note, it might actually do them some good to get other players into the mix and if the division tightens, that might not necessarily be a bad thing either. It might be a blessing in disguise to force the Astros to play with some adrenaline. I admit that I don’t have stats to back it up, but it seems that teams that do well in October are teams that play a few higher-stakes games in September. That’s not always true. Teams that consistently play well against good teams is the real test, but considering that many division match-ups take place in September, that’s always a good test for playoff teams, to see how well prepared they are for really competitive games where every pitch matters.

I thought this was an Onion article at first.

MLB umpires wearing white armbands to protest ‘attacks’

Perhaps they should read the 19th century poem, Mother, May I Slug the Umpire

Here’s the first verse:

Mother, may I slug the umpire
May I slug him right away?
So he cannot be here, Mother
When the clubs begin to play?

I wonder if the Cubs have some sort of record going.

Both Kris Bryant and Javier Baez have at least 20 home runs and less than 60 RBIs. That’s just right off of my head, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there are more.

Anyone know what team holds the record for most solo home runs in a season?

Remember when umpires were so good at their jobs that nobody really noticed them?

I’m enjoying this Little League Classic idea. It’d be great to be in the park; imagine watching a major league game with that kind of intimacy.

Aaron Judge just set the Major League record for consecutive games with a strikeout.

There’s your record-setter, my friends!

No.

Umpiring used to be MUCH worse. And much more self-aggrandizing.

Also, Kyle Schwarber has 20+ home runs this season, and an RBI total in the 40s

Nothing like waking up and seeing a great big “E” next to San Fransisco in the standings! :stuck_out_tongue:

No, there was just no way to argue calls with any proof. The pervasive use of instant replay has made officiating essentially perfect, even if it sometimes take awhile, and strike-zone imaging (and scoring of umps vs. the equipment) has made pitch calls far more consistent.

I was just looking at Magic Numbers today. Looks like SD is next.

Where do you see that? I’ve ever only seen them use E to mean eliminated from the post season (including wild card). And the Giants have not been eliminated from that. They’re 18 games back and ahead of the Phillies.

ETA: Sorry this was supposed to reply to silenus, but I don’t see a way to change the quote, so I’ll leave it as at least an indication of the topic.

The E is in the Divisional standings. It means they’ve been eliminated from any possibility of winning the division. They are 39 games behind the Dodgers, and have only 36 games left to play.
