MLB: August 2017

For comparison, I should mention that, in the early-80s, I used to get upper-deck box seats to mid-week night games for about $8.

Rick, you have to understand that Elvis is a Red Sox fan. Basically no World Series before 2004 really counted to us.

We’ll count 1967, friend.

Do please be careful about what you call “not true” if you follow it only with bluster, btw.

I’m sorry the facts are inconvenient. That the World Series was taken very seriously by the participants prior to 1969 is a fact supported by rather ample evidence.

In the winter, I read lots of books on baseball history. Of course, the World Series was important. Why would gamblers try to get the White Sox to throw the World Series? If no one cared about the World Series then, no one would be betting on it.

Babe Ruth calling his shot made nationwide news. Look at all the archival footage in Ken Burns’ Baseball, it shows packed stadiums at World Series games.

Nobody said nobody cared.

Keep whacking that strawman, guys.

In another attempt to turn baseball uniforms into Broadway costumes, this weekend is Players Weekend featuring stupid nicknames on the back of the jersey. Of course, my inbox is full of ads where I can buy these.

Christ that’s cheap!

I last went to AT&T in 2012 or so IIRC (the Gigantes actually won the WS that year). I think the cheap seats were something like $25-35. The park itself is actually one of the better ballparks to catch a game in terms of scenery, but it’s just miserable weather unless it’s Indian summer season in September.

I will now go out on a limb and predict that the Dodgers will finish this season with a winning record. You read it here first!

Sadly, I think you may be right.

Holy moley, they just keep rolling along! A magical season for them so far.

They’d have to go 0-48 to not have a winning season.

As improbable as the season for them has been to this point, I would not assume that something equally and opposite-ly improbable couldn’t happen to them now. Particularly after what happened to the Giants last season.

Hence, the carefully calculated timing of my proclamation!

Andrew McCutchen just left the game versus the Blue Jays. Looks like it might have been some sort of hamstring injury.

Too bad, just as the Pirates are starting to wake up and showing signs of life again.

I’m wanting the Cubs to win the NL Central, but I just saw a similar type of injury happen to Wilson Contreras and he’s likely out for most of the regular season.

Yeah, I just saw this today. He’s been their best player for the past month, no question. Tough to lose him.

Aaron Judge has been for shit ever since the break. Another tragic victim of the Home Run Derby.

Hey Joe Girardi:

Chapman is not now a closer. He may never be again. Please stop putting him in game situations. Better yet, trade his overrated ass. And while we’re at it, do whatever it takes to keep Clint Frazier in the majors. You don’t need so many pitchers. Let one of them go to Scranton. Lastly, the notion of burning the DH late in the game is a ballsy move, but you do it too often.

Judge is a victim of the inevitable fact that he wasn’t actually Ted Williams.

I’m sure he’ll come back and hit more homers, but the first half was pretty flukey.

I think a big part of it is the pitcher’s union figured out how to pitch too him. When he makes some adjustments, he’ll be back.
