MLB: August 2018

The Cardinals officially named Mike Shildt as their manager, removing the “interim” tag. They are still 4.5 behind the Cubs in the NL Central but are in the top spot in the NL wildcard. They have the best record in August and have won 9 series in a row.

If they make the playoffs Shildt has to be seriously considered for MOTY, right?

If they still hold a wild card spot on Sep 15 I think it would be safe to grow a playoff beard.

The Cubs game vs. the Mets was suspended by rain last night, tied 1-1 in the top of the 10th. It will resume at noon today. Back in the day, they would have declared the game a tie and played the entire game over. When did the rule change?

If two teams are not scheduled to meet later in the season and there are no playoff implications the game will be deemed a tie. Since they have a scheduled game today and the NL Central playoff picture is not settled they will resume the game today.

The rule was changed in 2007.

Considering that the Cardinals were just treading water at about .500 when he took over in July, and have been doing great since, I think MOTY is a definite possibility. From media reports, Shildt is a lot more laid back than the straitlaced guy he replaced, and the players have responded.

Astros take 2 of 3; Tyler White comes through again. Basically leaves the race more or less where it was coming in. On the other hand, they lose Charlie Morton to the DL for at least a while, which is a bit alarming.

I’ve read speculation that he’s O.K., though when Astros management says a guy has “discomfort” that’s lately been a call to book funeral arrangements, and that this will just give him a bit of rest before the Boston series.

Yeah, losing McCullers for God knows how long, and now Morton, is not a good thing. And Peacock, who I thought they’d give the SP keys to, can’t get out of his own way lately. Month of August, per BR: 12 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 1 HR. 22 K though. 3 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 16.5 K/9. Not as bad as I thought, the 16.5 K/9 probably helped tremendously. Even with the WHIP being a touch high for a reliever, and he nearly lost that game single-handedly last night.

I can’t remember a game when 14 runs were scored without a “crooked number.”

Cubs put Heyward on the DL. Why? Rosters expand tomorrow. The only thing I can think of is that they want to shut him down for the full ten days as they’ll need him in the playoffs and don’t want to risk any further injury. This way, he can’t talk himself back into the lineup or try to test his hamstring every day hoping for a start.
