MLB: August

I’ve come to believe that ‘play it by ear’ is Donnie’s mantra. I did read somewhere recently that Ryu does much better on the extra day’s rest. I also suppose that how Haren does in the next start or two will have an impact on Donnie’s decisions.

I’ll admit, this looks like a fun way to spend a rain delay. (Players sliding around on the tarp.)

White Sox got cheated by the new bs catcher blocking the plate rule

they’re up 1-0 and they tag a guy out at home and he’s called out.

then the crew chief decides they want to review it so they look at it in new york. it took a long time like 4-5 minutes probably. and after the review they called him safe. Now it’s a tie game this is an important play

fucking ridiculous

i was so mad I yelled at the tv (I usually only get this mad at football)

the manager was pissed (usually Robin is a calm guy so when he gets mad you know it’s serious) he jumped out of the bullpen yelling getting all up in the umpire’s face kicking dirt on the plate. Nice to see that he stands up for the team

Hawk (he’s the white sox broadcaster and also the best broadcaster in sports) was so mad too. He was yelling that it’s ridiculous. He said this is one of the times he wishes he could cuss on TV . He said it’s just pure BS. They’re ruining baseball just like they’re ruining football making it into a little girls’ game.

They’re really gonna have to do something to get rid of this rule or clarify it because the catcher was barely in front of the plate and similar calls have gone the other way.

dadgummit

Most outside fans believe, and White Sox fans usually agree, that Hawk is the biggest homer in broadcasting.

Oh, incidentally, I completely agree the rule is bullpucky. We survived with collisions for 125 years. They fixed what wasn’t broken.

Hawk admits he’s the biggest homer and he’s proud of it
nothing wrong with supporting the team

the team’s local broadcasters aren’t supposed to be objective like national broadcasts

There’s a big difference between rooting for one team as an announcer and showing your emotions and letting those emotions bias you reporting to say things like the umpire is favoring one team in his calls or saying a replay shows something it does not.

Every announcer can’t be Vin Scully.

You did?

What did you do when you got a concussion? Did it give you any long-term problems?

Oh, you mean that YOU were perfectly willing to watch other people get concussions for your entertainment.

“We” fans survived it fine, sure. Of course, “we” weren’t the ones getting injured.

The safety of the players is more important than whether we fans get confused about a play, or even disappointed at times. We’ll get over it, and won’t even have to wear a cast or have to go on the concussion DL.

We fans were perfectly happy without batting and catching helmets. The players weren’t.

We’ll probably see all pitchers wearing helmets in a few years.

How many home plate collisions happen in a season?

Yeah, it’s easy to be cavalier when the worst threat to our safety from the game is eating too many nachos on the sofa.

I’ll take irrelevant questions for a thousand, Alex.

If it was irrelevant, no rule would’ve been enacted. I can honestly say, at age 36, I can count on one hand how many violent collisions I’ve seen at home plate, 2nd base on the other hand…

Look, I find sympathizing with rich people who don’t contribute to the good of humanity impossible.

Funny, they contribute a lot to my good, since they play a game I adore and play it very well. I respect players and I don’t want them injured. If you have such contempt for athletes, why in the world do you watch them?

And yet you apparently spend half of your own useless life on the couch watching sports. It seems that these rich people do, in fact, contribute to the quality of your life.

Look, you’ve already made very clear, in the discussions on paying college football players, that you are not only ignorant of most of the actual issues, but that you don’t give a flying fuck about the welfare of the people who entertain you.

That is, of course, your right, but i’m not going to enable your selfish ignorance even further by engaging you anymore on this topic.

I’m horrified by the notion of another human being’s broken limbs or head injuries being of absolutely no concern in the pursuit of something to watch on TV. I get not thinking the current rule is the right one, but to sneer at the injuries is something else entirely.

Welcome to etv78’s world, where he seems to spend half his life watching sports, and half his time on these boards talking about sports, and yet holds in contempt the people who actually provide the entertainment.

"Thumbs whatever direction it’s supposed to be, Cassius! The gladiators die for our amusement. At half-time, after purging ourselves of these Lark’s Tongue’s in Aspic at the Purgetorium, we can regain our seats and watch some common criminals be torn apart by wild beasts.

Oh, by the way, how’s the wife?"

Well, that answers that question, at least for a bit. Ryu’s leg injury means that it will be spot starts for the foreseeable future.
