MLB-Hot Stove League winter 2022/23

The baseball player who sounds most like a law firm (since the retirement of Jacoby Ellsbury).

Maybe they should form a firm with former NFL player BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

The father and son combo of Vern Law and Vance Law would like a word with you.

Tom Browning pass at age 62. The Lefty was a long time Red and threw a Prefect Game back in '88. He had a 6 year run as a really solid starter. In fact checking BBR, he led the league 4 of those seasons in starts.

Reports are he died of natural causes.

Big stunner breaking overnight: Carlos Correa deal with Giants not happening and heading to Mets instead.

No real surprise here, but Aaron Judge is named captain.

I actually listened to the press conference. It was a nice touch that Jeter was there for this.

Huh. I don’t think there is any precedent for a massive contract being called off because of the physical.

I can’t be the only person hoping the Mets just shit the bed in 2023. It would be so funny for the hedge fund guy’s team to spend $350 million and just absolutely suck donkey ass. The 1992 Mets were “The Worst Team Money Could Buy,” and I’m rooting hard for the 2023 Mets to be worse.

I’m mixed on this. While it would be kind of funny, on the other side. This area gets really baseball crazy when both teams are really good. I enjoy that so much, I would take it over bad luck for the hedge fund guy.

Do other teams have captains, or is that just a Yankees thing?

I thought the Red Sox did and one wore a “C” on his jersey similar to hockey captains.

Varitek?

That’s what I was thinking. Only person I ever knew that wore a C.

Trivia: name the somewhat famous Yankee who was stripped of his captaincy after climbing into the stands in an attempt to fight a fan.

I think I know it, but I’m getting confused.
It was either Hal Chase or Frank Chance.

Actually as I think back, one was a player manager so it was probably Hal Chase, also in trouble connected to the Black Sox.

Actually I recall both John Franco & Keith Hernandez wearing the “C” on the jersey.

I did some digging, as of today, only Aaron Judge is a Captain in the MLB.
In the last 2 seasons there were none.

Which just looked so silly.

Hockey has captains and alternates with letters on their jerseys because there are actually rules in hockey about captains being allowed to talk to officials about stuff other players cannot talk about. Baseball has no need of such a thing.

The Yankees didn’t have a captain during their greatest modern run, 1996-2000. ETA: Nor did they when they won five World Series in a row, 1949-1953.

Now I feel bad.

The ‘somewhat famous’ was meant to be ironic.

Babe Ruth?

Yanks didn’t have a Captain during the incredible runs in the 40s & 50s either. But also not during the late 60s /early 70s very dry spell. There was a large gap between Gehrig & Munson.

Captains & Old Timers games are things Yankee Fans like that most teams don’t have or care about. It is all cool.
