Rumor has it the Jays are close to signing Cheis Davis. A previous rumor had Edwin Encarnacion demanding an extension, so will they sign Davis and deal Edwin?
I’d rather have Edwin, who is two years older but doesn’t strike out 200 times a year or have the odd season where he bats .196, and extending him doesn’t cost a draft pick.
Finalized. The Yankees trade was contingent on Zobrist signing with Chicago. Castro goes to NYY as their everyday 2B, and insurance in case their SS gets hurt. The Cubs get RHP Adam Warren (3.29ERA last season in 43 games, in the rotation and bullpen at different times) and INF Brendan Ryan.
Hell yeah you’d rather have Encarnacion. I read this morning the O’s are still trying re-sign Davis, so who knows. I don’t know what kind of money Davis wants, but I wouldn’t want anything to do with him.
I really like what the Yankees have been doing the last few years. It won’t pay off next season, and it might not work all, but I’m all for not over paying for stars way past their primes. I’d rather gamble on four years of Starlin Castro (25) than watch Zobrist (35) decline.
By the end of 2017, Teixeira, A-Rod, Sabathia and Beltran will all be gone and $85 million will be shaved off the payroll. Gardner and Ellsbury will be the “old” players on the roster at 34, with just a few others over 30.
Well that seems a little extreme. Davis is a good player. I just don’t think he’d be worth what they’d end up paying for him, especially given the fact that first base is not a hole that needs to be filled. Toronto actually has a surplus there.
There may be a big picture I am missing. Maybe they plan on signing Davis and already know they can deal Encarnacion for some good young talent. It would have to be SOLID talent though, as I am not a big fan of the idea of getting rid of a very good hitter you already have for a more or less equivalent player. There’s no obvious value in that and a number of potential downsides.
Looks like the Mets are trading Jon Niese for Pirates’ 2B Neil Walker. Walker is pretty much a straight replacement for Daniel Murphy, and the Mets have plenty of options for a fifth starter.
It’s a classic straightup trade – MLB player for MLB player, with no prospects. You don’t see a lot of those these days.
The Astros also paid a ton for Phillies closer Ken Giles - Brett Oberholtzer is a 26-year-old fifth starter so no big loss there, but Vince Velasquez is a major league-ready starter and the other two guys are real prospects.
Yeah, I’m not seeing the swindle. Arizona has a solid offense; adding Greinke and Miller, the former at LA’s expense, makes them the early favourite.
The Diamondbacks have first rate hitters at their peak who put up some of the best hitting numbers in the NL. They had a crap rotation that cost them having a winning record. Now is the time to make big moves, get big arms, and take a run at a championship. Miller is a very good pitcher and he’s cheap and under control for a few years yet. Every team in MLB could use him.

Commissioner Manfred says he’ll decide on Pete Rose’s fate by the end of the month.
[/QUOTE]
At this point the only “fate” Rose can have is whether or not he’ll be in the Hall of Fame before he dies, or ever. At his age I doubt he has a managing career to go to. I don’t believe he should ever be allowed into MLB again but I wouldn’t be at all bothered if tyhey put his plaque up in the Hall.
What I find baffling about this is that Manfred needs until “The end of the month” to decide anything. What the heck is there to mull over? Why is this being dragged out? Tell Rose if he’s reinstated or not, or get the HOF to change the rule or don’t. This file has been on Manfred’s desk long enough, hasn’t it?
He wont be allowed to wear body armor again, right? It’ll be harder for him to stand right over the plate. How would a Drysdale or a Gibson have handled him?
I very much doubt Bonds can field a position at this point in his life, and given that he hasn’t played baseball in more than 8 years, he probably can’t really hit major league pitching either. I mean, he was really really great but there are limits.
Imho Barry Bonds of the Pirates would have gone on to be one of the alltime greats. He was a 5 tool player. He didnt need steroids or HGH. He didnt need to destroy his reputation. He also didn’t need to be an asshole to those around him.
Tangently, if anyone played LaRussa Baseball for Sega Genesis, Bonds was a beast and would occasionally hit 70 hrs and steal a crapload of bases. I remember it well because you had to physically keep season statistics. Gerald Williams (:o) was the other beast.
Zobrist, Lackey, AND Heyward? The Cubbies are going all the way in… and that has just turned into the scariest team in the NL (not in the least because they took productive pieces from the Cards while doing so).
