I sat here with the Reds game on (see my ongoing problems with Thom Brennamen for reference), and it occurred to me that the only two people bigger than Brennamen as far as being overly biased towards the team they cover were Joe Buck in St Louis and Hawk Harrelson in Chicago. And then it clicked.
What did? Thom and Joe are both sons of broadcasters from the same team they announce for now, but I’m not sure how Hawk fits in there.
It clicked because Thom Brennamen and Joe Buck are two of the most biased reporters (or homers) in baseball today. Irrespective of their fathers, who I really wasn’t even thinking of.
Hawk Harrelson is just as biased for the White Sox as Joe and Thom are for their teams. I can count on one hand the number of times that Hawk has actually criticized the Sox players (I grew up listening to Harry Carey, so I’m familiar with the “rabid fan of the team you broadcast for” meme). With Joe and Thom, rarely is a miscue the fault of their team. Hawk is the worst of the lot. Honestly, him calling a Sox game is like asking John Madden what he thinks of Tom Brady or Bret Favre.
To Hawk, Mark Beurlhe shits diamonds out of a platinum asshole. During Mark’s tenure in Chicago, I’m sure that Hawk mentioned the WAR stat, and it just popped into my head.
Listening to the Reds game last night got me to thinking about bias announcers. That led me to think about Hawk Harrelson, and his praise for all things Sox made me think of Beurlhe
Now that we’ve had a guided tour through your brain, it’s probably time for the August thread.
I’m surprised we didn’t have any casualties on that trip. I think RickJay is still lost at the gift shop.
