As always, July 1 means Bobby Bonilla day!
The trade deadline this season won’t be until August 2, but we could see fire sales happening sooner, the Cubs and Nationals dismantling last year was painful.

I don’t see many trades that make sense for the Yanks. I mean there is a pair of Outfielders that could be moved, but I don’t think any other team would want them. Gallo as he is an all or nothing hitter on the Dave Kingman level and the off-injured Aaron Hicks.
If Yanks do trade for an outfielder, it will almost surely be a lefty or switch hitter.
Yanks are in good shape on pitching with 4 returning from the IL and several excellent prospects in AAA ready to help. At least 2 spare starters in Germán & 26 year old lefty JPSears who is 3-0. Chapman and Loáisiga getting close to returning and Zack Britton probable for August.
Catching is not a need despite a few pundits still talking about it. Trevino is dong well and much better production than anyone expected out of the catchers this year. Donaldson is a little weak at third (and an ass) but he still plays above average defense. No real need for improvement this year I think.
ETA: I forgot to add, Estevan Florial has been hitting well in AAA Scranton and is a 24 year old lefty hitter. He’s probably not quite ready, but has 26 steals also so far this year.
No one ever mentions the fact that Bonilla has also been getting a $500,000 check from the Orioles every July 1. That deferred contract runs from 2004-2028.
Also, today marks the final payment the Braves have to make to Bruce Sutter. They signed him to a $9.1m contract in 1985, but only paid him interest during the length of it, opting to then pay out $1.12m every from 1991 through 2021, with a final principal payment of $9.1m in 2022.
I do find this season interesting in that there are so many truly awful clubs this season. Besides the Cubs and Nationals who deliberately blew things up last year, the Reds, A’s, Tigers, and Royals seem stuck with and teams. There’s a bit more optimism for the Orioles and Marlins.
I’ll be interested to see what the Mets do if Scherzer doesn’t return healthy soon, there’s got to be a rental arm they’d be wanting as the team is stocked to go deep into the playoffs.
Of all sad words
Of baseball tongue or pen
The saddest are these
Hansel Robles is pitching again
How about Ian Happ? A switch hitting, multi-postion player who can play center. He would be a huge upgrade from Marwin Gonzalez. If this isn’t the year to use some farm pieces, when is?
If the Cubs are willing to trade him, he would be an excellent fit. It looks like he has one more year of Arb left also.
So, does this mean the A’s could stay in Oakland or is this just more theatre before what I think is an inevitable move to Las Vegas?
I am officially ‘anyone but the fucking Mets!!!’ as of today. Yeah, I know I have a lot of New Yorkers in my social and work circles, but my God, the obnoxious sore winning from their fans.
What happened?
Having an actual offense may have made some of them a bit giddy.
This doesn’t look good, waiting for more details, but Juan Soto was injured in a frustrating extra inning loss for the Nats
There has been so much foreplay and teasing abut an A’s stadium over the last 15-20 years that my philosophy is to see where they hold their home opener every April and conclude that is probably where they will be for the following six months.
Remember last month when I was a little excited about the Nats having won six out of eight? Well, after being swept by the Marlins…
And two in extra innings to the awful Marlins. And I forgot to start Patrick Corbin in my NL only fantasy league because of the early start and me staying out too late!
How clueless do you have to be to have the Philadelphia Phillies OFF on the 4th of July?! Phillies should have a home game, just as the Washington Nationals did.
Not to mention those Yankee Doodle Dandies. Apparently even the Yankee players were surprised they were off.
Juan Soto’s MRI was negative and he avoided any serious injury. He wasn’t in the lineup today, but he pinch-hit in the 8th and drew a walk before being replaced by a pinch-runner.
Yes, I’m curious too. I’ve always been a Mets fan (except for that one, brief 36-year hiatus I didn’t watch baseball after '86). I realize people from NY can be obnoxious, but what have they done this time?
I’m really enjoying watching the Mets this year. And what’s not to like:
This is a hustling team. Brandon Nimmo sprints to first after a walk like Pete Rose used to. That sets a great example for fans and his teammates. They have made a lot of good things happen just by running well this year.
They are playing old-fashioned baseball in that they are stringing together hits. The Mets are hitting their share of homers, but they have had a lot of wins that came from just putting the ball in play. I like that style.
As we get deeper into the season we see weariness and injury setting in. But the Mets have depth in both fielding and hitting. A lot of versatility. The pitchers are holding up well too as we wait for Scherzer and deGrom to return.
I find the team likeable. Last year I thought Javier Baez was a bad influence. He seemed to stir the pot with other teams quite a bit, and got others to join in. None of that this year, despite the Mets’ batters getting hit A LOT.
I’m a happy Mets fan. I’ll keep watching even if they tail off.
Cubs prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong (currently their #3 prospect) makes a potential “minor league Catch of the Year.”
