MLB: June 2017

CC Sabathia left the Yankees-Angel game last night in the 4th inning with a hamstring injury. He had been pitching great of late.

Cubs selling old World Series ivy for $200 a leaf is the best hustle in sports. And here are more areas in Wrigley Field that you will never be.

“Meant to evoke the breezy summer vibes of the Cubs’ former spring training site on California’s Catalina Island, the club has retractable glass windows for “the perfect summer day at Wrigley Field, where the wind is blowing through.””

Never mind that most fans don’t recall the Cubs training at Catalina Island give the Cubs haven’t played there since 1951.

How many current Brooklyn Dodgers fans ever went to one of their actual games?

How many current Brooklyn Dodgers fans exist?

These guys, for just one Google hit.

It’s a trendy thing, like being a Cubs fan or a Red Sox pink-hatter.

Those people appear to be fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers who live in New York City.

They’re dying off but just a decade ago there was a surprising number. At least there was in the Bayridge section of the Brooklyn. Brooklyn is another world in some ways. The Dodgers were a big part of their identity and the old timers never let go.

Those look like LA Dodger fans that might happen to live in Brooklyn.

How many Los Angeles Dodgers live in New York City?

Major League Baseball will relax its uniform rules for a weekend later this season, allowing players to put nicknames on the back of their jerseys, wear fluorescent-colored shoes and personalize a patch paying tribute to someone instrumental in their development, according to a memo obtained by Yahoo Sports.

Does the game really need this?

“The jerseys from the weekend will be sold by MLB…”

Was there a doubt?

The rest of the quote.

The mighty Casey has struck out.

Hey, if nicknames on uniforms kick up interest in baseball, it’s better than any number of the silly rule changes that have been suggested by Mr. Manfred.

Aaron Judge should put “Gretzky” on his.

I’m sure that MLB and the players union will get their cut before distributing proceeds.

You may be sure, but it doesn’t say some of the proceeds.

True enough. Just tired of all the special occasion jerseys and caps that serve no purpose other than to sell merchandise. Let MLB and the MLBPA donate a lump sum to specific charities on these occasions, owners can donate part of the gate, fans can make donations if they wish, and the players can wear the regular uniforms and patches. Didn’t mean for my cynicism to offend.

I believe the proceeds from all of those are also donated. And as they obviously sell, some fans must want them. As it raises money for charity, I find it fine. It’s better than the money going to the Yankees, etc. when the regular jerseys are sold. I don’t know that these sales displace sales of regular jerseys, but they probably do to some extent.

Mounting injuries for the Yanks on this thus far 1 & 3 West Coast swing. 3 games in Oakland to go.

CC Sabathia is on the 10 day DL, Gary Sanchez & Aaron Hicks both picked up injuries last night. Also Bird who was playing in AAA was put back on the DL related to a knee injury. Sanchez left with tightness in the abductor muscle after stealing second. Sounds like Sanchez & Hicks will be day to day. Adam Warren is also day to day but might require a DL stint. A trap muscle is the problem for him.

Clippard had another bad outing, they’ve been mounting of late. Giovanny Gallegos may have earned a ticket back to the minors after losing the game in the 10th. I think the Yanks may summon some fresh arms.

At least Aroldis Chapman is due back soon. That is the best bullpen help they can get. He’ll pitch tonight for AA Trenton.

The Red Sox need to just stop trading for relievers. Now Tyler Thornburg is gone for the season, and there’s no guessing when/if Carson Smith will be able to contribute. They traded Wade Miley and Travis Shaw, both guys they could really use today, for zero.

As a 30-second respite from politics and greed and such, we go to the top of the 3rd inning on Friday evening, June 16, 2017, in Great American Ball Park. Dodgers playing the Reds. In the top of the 1st, Justin Turner hit a single to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Now it’s the top of the 3rd…

[li]29-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers TV announcer Joe Davis, interestedly: “Talk about Justin Turner’s average overall bein’ three seventy-seven comin’ in, when you narrow it down to just this hitting streak it’s over four fifty.”[/li][li]58-year-old Orel Hershiser, former 204-game winner, emphatically: “That’s hot.” (followed by 10 seconds of dead air as Turner preps for getting into the batter’s box)[/li][li]Joe, matter-of-factly: “You’re not the best analyst in the biz for nothin’, Hershiser.”[/li][/ul]
