MLB: June 2017

Weird game for the Houston pitching staff - 6 pitchers, 17 strikeouts, and 8 runs allowed.

Wow. Angels beat the Dodgers on a walk-off strikeout! You don’t see that very often.

If the situation in Chicago is so fragile that “impressionable young players” are under threat from a catcher blowing off steam, then it’s doubtful they’ll be celebrating a repeat championship in Wrigley.

Seems more likely that Montero’s been a clubhouse cancer for some time, and this is just the excuse.

That’s gotta be true. No veteran catcher who can hit is going to be cut for one outburst. This is quite likely the tip of an iceberg.

I fell across this interesting fact; according to BB-Ref and Fangraphs, Madison Bumgarner’s 2017 performance is worth about 1 WAR.

But the problem with this is that Madison Bumgarner has pitched in four games, and his team lost all of them.

If in fact the Giants have lost every game Bumgarner has been in, he cannot have contributed to them winning any games above any level. It’s logically impossible. That doesn’t mean Bumgarner didn’t play well, but the fact of the matter is that he has not helped the Giants win any games. Maybe it’s not his fault, but it is true.

There is perhaps a cautionary point here; don’t believe WAR is perfect. Of course, since Bumgarner has only pitched in four games, that makes it possible for this little weirdness to have occurred; the WAR system kind of assumes you played more than four games. If a guy’s career across 2100 games says he was worth 54 WAR, he probably was. If you take a position player who plays in 156 games, it’s likely his WAR closely reflects his value, because he was in all the games and it’s just not very likely he did all his production in the games his team lost. But, if you have a starting pitcher who pitched in 34 games… well, it’s unlikely his WAR will be as far from the truth as Bumgarner’s, but it might be off by a bit and maybe even a lot.

Montero had previously complained about his playing time on the day of the World Series parade. Not exactly a Mensa move.

Okay, it’s an iceberg with TWO tips.

MLB TV is on sale for $10 until the end of tonight’s games.

Another lengthy rain delay, White Sox/Yankees delayed until a 10 PM start tonight on a Thursday. These long rain delays suck, especially on a weekday. The Yankees and White Sox are done for the year after this game, so I guess they’re trying to do everything to get the game in. Hopefully they’ll allow the fans to get credit for a future game, it’s not like the White Sox are packing them in.

Yankees have to fly to Houston for a night game tomorrow. White Sox are home tomorrow night.

Just got home from Petco, where the Padres beat Atlanta 6-0, thanks to a couple of 2-run blasts by Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe, and an excellent 7-inning scoreless outing by Dinelson Lamet, who went through the first three innings without allowing a baserunner, and then spread four hits over the next four innings.

There was one minor kerfuffle, when the Braves’ manager came out to talk to the umpires in the 6th innings, and the umpires then went to the mound and patted down the San Diego pitcher, presumably for foreign substances. Lots of booing erupted from the stands, and after about 30 seconds the umpires were apparently satisfied that nothing was amiss.

Yankees prospect Dustin Fowler got called up and into his first MLB game. Should be a great night even if he goes 0 for 4 right? Sadly in the first inning he collided hard with the RF wall and had to be carted off the field for immediate surgery. I really feel sorry for the kid, this will set him back at least a season if not more.

I hope he makes a full recovery.

Dodgers and Mets each hit 50 home runs in the month of June (with tonight still to go). For LA, it is a franchise record. What a season so far.

Man, that really sucks. What is an electrical box doing there? A ruptured patella tendon is some serious damage. He may never recover the speed that’s an important part of his game (he had 15 triples last year.)

If he hadn’t been at DH last night, Aaron Judge would have been the one chasing that foul ball.

The DL is getting crowded. The AAA replacements are coming up and landing on it:

CC Sabathia
Tyler Austin
Starlin Castro
Matt Holliday
Greg Bird
Aaron Hicks
Adam Warren
Dustin Fowler

What a shitty month. It’s even shittier that the Yankees have lost nine one-run games in June.

I don’t know if we can conclude he was a clubhouse cancer or not; I’m going with “If you get stolen on 7 freaking times in one game, keep your mouth shut” as being the reason. Certainly Arrieta’s delivery is a factor, just like John Lester’s refusal to throw to first. You didn’t hear David Ross witching about that during their post-season run and I’m sure he was the least comfortable player on the field whenever Lester was on the mound. There’s something to be said for being the veteran and keeping it together. I mean, it’s not like the team kept Montero because of his exceptional ability. He played back up to a 40-year old last year – for a reason.

I hope I never see it again. What an ugly way to lose. Grandal went from hero, having hit the game-tying home run, to essentially losing the game for us - in the span of about 10 minutes. Thankfully, the following game took some of the sting away.

Hopefully Nolan Arenado will be the NL All-Star game starter at third when the teams are announced tomorrow.

He was deserving even before this play.

July thread.
