Truth is spoken here. Closers remind me a little bit of NFL kickers: it’s a high-stress position, and relatively few guys are able to excel at the position for an extended period.
If the Mets had re-signed Edwin Diaz he wouldn’t have done them a lot of good thus far in 2026 (10.50 ERA with the Dodgers, before his departure for a long spell on the IL).
A reminder that the Mets won three games in a row after Soto went on the IL, so his return may not be the magic they need to begin a revival.
Doubtful if they can match or exceed the team record for most losses in a row (17 in 1962) but it’ll be interesting to see if they can provide that season highlight.
The apocalypse is upon us. The Yankees are going to have alternate road jerseys. First they allowed beards to accomodate pitching bust Devin Williams, now they lose another piece of tradition. Heaven forbid they ever resort to putting names on jerseys.
As Aaron Judge said, “I’m all about tradition, but we’ve got a [Starr Insurance] patch on our sleeves.” Let’s not get too precious about the Yankees’ commitment to “tradition”.
The Yankees have an interesting dilemma. Anthony Volpe is coming back soon. His rehab assignment is going well. But how will they fit him in the roster?
Ben Rice is going nowhere at first.
Jazz Chisholm is at 2nd
Volpe will be the everyday SS
They love Ryan McMahon’s glove at 3rd. Others can play there but he’s the best at it. If they DFA him they have to eat a $16million contract.
Ahmed Rosario has been doing great in whatever role they ask. They love his versatility.
Jose Caballero has speed and can play multiple positions. They seem to love him too.
They didn’t bring back Paul Goldschmidt just to drop him. He’s not an everyday player anymore but they love him against lefies and he’s still a defensive upgrade at 1st when they need it.
They could go with 12 pitchers. There is some bullpen dead weight. But I doubt that will happen. That pitching dead weight will be dropped when Cole and Rodon come back.
I have no idea what they are going to do.
Also Jasson Dominguez is tearing up AAA. Do they let him sit there?
I’d like to know- why is Randal Grichuk needed? He hasn’t hit for shit so far, Dominguez could very likely do as well offensively. I say put Bellinger in LF, Grisham CF, Judge RF and let Dominguez play when the starters need a day off.
I think it will be Grichuk, which is a shame because he’s been hammering the ball consistently but only recently started getting results. Caballero played a little left last year, and both Rosario and Chisholm jr. have experience in the outfield.
It really is a problem because the deep bench has been great, but I can’t see them going with 12 pitchers.
It might be time to let Goldschmidt go.
Another possibility is sending Escarra to AAA and letting Rice do some catching. I don’t think anyone likes that idea, though.
It is very early in the season and they’re two teams going in opposite directions, but it is still really nice when the Yanks Sweep the Redsox. Woot!
4-0, 4-1 & 4-2 to close it out. Pitching for the Yanks was really good.
With this the Yanks are 1st in the AL by 2.5 and Sox are 2nd to last.
Though it is early and that is still only 7 games back. But it looks good.
Overall the pitching has been really good, hopefully the bats can get hot. Yanks are hitting homers, walking and stealing bases, but that is about all.
Pitching, Yanks are actually #1 in ERA & 2nd in WHIP. And this is with Cole still on Rehab.
Stanton pulled up lame running the bases tonight. You may get your wish. Assuming he might need some time off they may just use that as an opportunity to bring back Volpe without having to make a tough choice.
More bad luck from the Mets. They just got back Soto and Lindor is out injured, probably for a significant amount of time. Talk is at least until sometime in August.
