Since Opening Day is less than 72 hours away I thought I’d kick off the regular season threads.
So, what are you most excited for?
As a Yankees fan I’m looking forward to seeing how the kid, Volpe, does as a 21-year old starting shortstop. The pitching injuries dampen my early enthusiasm but with Cole and Cortes I’m hoping they can make it through until they get some arms back.
St. Louis also has a kid, 20-year old Jordan Walker, who found out over the weekend he’ll be going north with the club. Walker, who burned up spring training while many of the more experienced players were away at the WBC.
As a Cubs fan, I’m hoping that the Dansby Swanson signing is, at the very least, the start of a 180 for the team. Him at shortstop allows Nico Hoerner to switch to his natural position of second base. That’s a pretty good “up the middle” defensive pair.
Rookie Hayden Wesneski, acquired from the Yankees in the Scott Effross trade, appears to have won the 5th starter spot out of spring training. This kid has a world of potential.
It was a disappointing season last year. But I think Chicago has at least started to turn it around again. Losing Willson Contreras to St. Louis hurts, and could hurt badly. But I think we can pull this off.
I can’t say I’m excited in anticipation, but it’ll be interesting to see if the Red Sox can defy expectations and contend for a wild card, or if the Elmer’s glue and baling wire holding together their aging veterans and remaining injury-prone regulars won’t hold, leading to a precipitous collapse.
82 wins seems a bit optimistic, but who knows what’ll happen if Bello and the other young arms come through?
*it’s been fun reading fan comments about the team on the Boston Globe website. Wild optimism followed the Sox getting off to a 9-0 start in spring training, but that’s been tempered a bit as they’ve since gone 5-13 (c’mon guys, it’s just the spring). The best news is that Chris Sale has looked OK and his arm hasn’t flown off at the shoulder yet.
The Athletic has an article today where they have fans tell why they are either optimistic or pessimistic about their team’s season. This made me laugh from a Red Sox fan:
Pessimist Tony: There are 206 bones in the human body, and Chris Sale has broken only 113 of them thus far since signing with the Red Sox. So much opportunity to run the skeletal table.
Looking at MLB.TV on my Roku and it says Mets opening day is blacked out. The game is on MLB Network, I assume that just means a blackout for the local NY and FL stations?
I don’t even really follow baseball and haven’t been to a game since I was a kid, but I’m making a brief exception next month since I’m going to be in Chicago and the Padres, my hometown team, are going to be in town playing the Cubs. I’ve been talked into attending the game and have picked up a Padres shirt with Yu Darvish’s name and number on the back so as to work the locals for some cheap heat.
As a local, I’d also suggest checking the weather carefully, I hope you get gorgeous spring weather but prepare for anything, including dressing like you’re going to watch the Chicago Bears in December!
You never know. The entire state of Iowa is MLB Network blackout territory for the Cubs, White Sox, Twins, Brewers, Cardinals, and Royals. The southern third of Nevada is blacked out from the A’s, Giants, Dodgers, Angels, Padres, and Diamondbacks.
The only way to know for sure is to type your zip code in here and see what comes up.
It’s a national broadcast game - it’ll be blacked out for everyone that doesn’t have MLB Network. (It might actually be available locally in Miami, but that’s where it gets fuzzy.)
No. MLB Network is a cable channel separate from MLB.tv. However, I noticed the other day that Roku just picked up some version of MLB Network on their Roku Channel. I’m on vacation, but it’s be worth a look to see if it’s the same broadcast.
Blue Jays fan. Always an exciting time when the season starts. Was excited for the 2021 season as I thought we had a good team, and did but just missed the playoffs by a game so that was a fun season. Last year, I thought the team was a little bit better so was excited to get the season started. The Yankees started out well, the Orioles surprised so that added to the fun. Thought we would do better in playoffs. This year, I feel this team is even better. Can’t wait to see what happens. Right off the bat, Jays vs Cardinals, want to see what this Walker guy is all about.
