I believe that’s correct. There are numerous examples of no-hitters being lost with 2 outs in the ninth. Here’s an article from MLB with a number of those games.
That sounds like the definition of frustration in baseball.
The winning rally was started by a throwing error. Following that, a sacrifice bunt, intentional walk (to Hank Aaron), and then the winning hit by Joe Adcock. Adcock’s hit went over the fence, but Aaron thought it had bounced over, so he didn’t touch home plate but went directly to the dugout. He was then ruled out, so Adcock didn’t get credit for a home run.
I was looking at the box score on baseball-reference and there it’s claimed that Adcock passed Aaron on the basepath between second and third and was called out, but the game officially ended with the score 2-0. That was later changed by the president of the NL who ruled that since it wasn’t a homerun (Adcock out on the basepaths) only the winning run counted, 1-0. Weird game.
The opposing pitcher for Milwaukee, Lew Burdette, scattered 12 hits over 13 innings and got the shutout. I wish they kept track of pitch counts back then.
Anthony Rizzo is going to retire as a Cub.
Weirdest game I’ve seen in a long time. Jusus Luzardo of the Phillies was getting roughed up by the Mets in the top of the first, four runs in already with only one out. Manages to get out of the inning by snagging a scorching line drive (which was a certain hit and another run if he doesn’t grab it) and doubling the runner off second.
Luzardo comes back out and pitches seven perfect innings followed by Duran striking out the side in the 9th. Zero baserunners for the Mets after the first. Meanwhile the Phils score six runs to win.
Amazing recovery by Luzardo. Especially since earlier in the season he had a number of games where he was similarly hit hard early and just collapsed.
Dodgers appear to have their mojo back, along with a few players from the IL. Should be quite the series in SF this weekend.
Mariners have pulled into a divisional tie with the Astros after winning the last 6 games in a row.
The last two games were both won in walkoff scores in extra innings.
Come on guys, I don’t want to have to stay up late every night to find out if you won or not.
Just be glad you’re not on the East Coast waiting for the results.
Anyway, fun games. Astro series is looming large.
Ugh, yeah, I can’t even imagine.
Waiting after 11 PM (on a work night) is bad enough. That’s after 2 AM on the east coast.
Yankees beat the Red Sox 4-1. Still 3 games back in the East but in the top wild card spot. With a 1st inning home run Judge passes DiMaggio for the 3rd most in team history. He needs 131 more to catch up to Gehrig.
So… Next season?
Well this season isn’t over yet.
Tonight the Royals continued their September swoon, losing to the Phillies 8-6. KC is now below .500 on the season and is virtually out of the playoff race.
In tonight’s game, Salvador Perez of the Royals hit 2 home runs and drove in 3 runs. The 35-year-old Perez, who has played his entire 14-year career with the Royals, now has 300 home runs and 1,000 RBIs. He has a career batting average of .264.
Probably not HOF-worthy, but certainly a stellar career.
The Brewers are now guaranteed a playoff spot. How many regular season games are left?

For most teams either 13 or 14 depending on the remaining schedule, postponed games, etc.

This has been a really weird year. Most likely no one will get to 100 wins. Seattle might but they have to play .750 ball until the end. I didn’t look at their schedule. They do have a pretty bad away record for a #1 team. Every team has had their ups and downs. Most races are pretty tight. The NL East should be tight except for the Mets monumental collapse. I don’t know who I would pick as the favorite going into the post season. The Phillies are the hottest at the moment but a few other teams are hot too.
Indeed. Milwaukee, which still has the best record, would have to go 9-4 in their remaining games to make 100; possible, but only if they get hotter than they have been.
Philadelphia (with the next-best record) would have to go 11-2; Toronto would have to go 14-0. No one else even has a shot any more, as they all already have 63 or more losses.
Nope. They’re at 81-68; even if they were to win out, they’d wind up at 94-68.
My mind was thinking Brewers. My fingers said Mariners.
