MLB Spring Training 2018

Do all you folks have MLBTV?

I am considering it, It is $115 per 2018 season. Seems like a lot of money. But if I watch two games a day, it comes to about 36 cents a game. Cheap entertainment.

So, how do you watch MLB?

I have MLB.tv and have had it for several years. It is well worth it for me as a baseball fan. I watch on Apple TV and my ipad. I’ll also stream audio on my iphone. I’ve watched games while traveling in Ireland, the UK, and Canada. In the past, I’ve streamed games on my laptop as well.

Obviously, if you only care about your local team, it isn’t worth it. I also understand some of their blackouts are quite odd. I remember traveling in Las Vegas a few years ago and I think the D-Backs, Angels, and Dodgers were blacked out.

For me, it’s well worth it as I’ll watch almost any MLB game. It was quite wonderful back when I could work from home often and could enjoy a day game in the background.

Tried MLB.TV last year. Wasn’t worth it. The Dodgers were always blacked out. That was the sole reason I signed up for it, since I refuse to deal with Spectrum and FIOS hasn’t got a contract with FoxSportsWest.

Yeah, MLB.tv isn’t the way to see your local team live. I work night shift, so usually the Cubs game was available on replay a couple hours after the game ended, but there didn’t seem to be a predictable pattern.

Obviously, there are VPNS that can ‘trick’ the app into thinking you’re elsewhere, but that seems like a pain to deal with.

I’ve been an MLB.TV subscriber since 2010. I find it well worth the money, but as Dale mentioned, it’s fairly useless if all you care about is the team already in your market (though you may still find MLB Radio useful in that circumstance if you like listening to games where an actual radio isn’t convenient). Since I closely follow two teams outside of my market (and basically enjoy watching any game when I have time), the cost is a no-brainer for me.

Depends on the team. I could subscribe to NESN, the Red Sox channel, in Florida if there weren’t already plenty of their games on MLB Network and ESPN, both basic cable, with their playoff games on Fox. That’s enough for me, but YMMV.

MLB Network picked up the NESN broadcast of the Yankees-Red Sox game. What a pain to watch. During every Yankee at bat, they basically ignored the game and talked about their team charity. Not to knock their charity, but I tuned in to watch a game. With all of the prospects batting, it would have been nice to know who was coming up to bat. Nope, all we got was talk about the charity. Once in a while they might have a graphic of who the batter was, but usually not. Thank God I’m not in NESN’s market, I’d rather watch a meaningless Tiger game than these clowns.

That was indeed the worst game coverage I had ever seen. It is the only time in my life where I thought Joe Morgan would have done a better job covering a game.

Yes, you definitely have to be aware of the blackout restrictions before subscribing. But I’ve found it worthwhile - you also get full access to the MLB At-Bat app on your smartphone.

If $115/year is too much for your budget, wait until Father’s Day weekend. There’s always a big sale.

Ugh, D-backs bringing back the bullpen cart. Because there just isn’t enough time during pitching changes.
NBC Sports - HardballTalk: The Diamondbacks are bringing back the bullpen cart

I don’t know, I thought the bullpen carts were kind of cute and if they go faster than the pitcher can trot in, actually would save time.

There is just no way any current pitcher would use that, right? I assume the pitcher will jog in, and some lackey will drive the cart in to deliver the pitcher’s jacket to the dugout. That’s the only possible way.

If it has got to be used, at least only use it for the first pitching change. It would be maddening to have to deal with that sideshow during an inning with multiple pitching changes.

Firing them towards the mound from a cannon would save even more time.

Thanks for all the comments. I am going to purchase the season pass from MLB.

No worry about blackouts in my area.

The blackout rules suck, especially for a service that costs basically $20 a month (if we’re counting just the regular season). I never bothered with it in Baltimore, for precisely that reason.

Now that i’m on the west coast, though, i subscribe every year, because i can get basically every Orioles game. The only team blacked out on a regular basis is the Padres, but i really don’t care about them anyway.

Lucky for us in Japan. MLB.tv for the same price as in the US, get every MLB game live including All-Star Game, Playoffs and World Series. I watch more Dodger games now than I ever did living in the US.

Canada had no blackouts the last few years - a huge improvement from before when all of Canada was considered Blue jays territory and blacked out - so I’m hopeful that continues.

Is there any chance of Bartolo Colon or CC Sabathia switching to pitching relief?

I won’t presume to speak for Sabathia, but given Colon’s nature, I’m guessing that even as a reliever, he’d only use the cart if they let him drive it!
