Mmmm, brains ...

I’m reasonably certain this question would have been asked when the movie came out, but I wasn’t on the boards back then so …

In “Hannibal”, Anthony Hopkins eats Ray Liotta’s brains. Assuming a person has any to begin with, is it actually possible to do so while a person lives as in the film?

Yeah, it’s possible…people can survive rather drastic brain damage, even retain consciousness during it. Lot’s of brain research has been done on people who were conscious while scientists had their skulls open and probed their brains. People have survived having large portions of their brains blown out by handguns - saw a guy on a talkshow who had at least a third of his brainpan blown off by a handgun, and graduated college (albeit community college). Lobotomies used to be performed on conscious people without anaesthetic by inserting a long metal prod into their brains and stirring.

Oh, yes. Silly of me not to have considered that stuff. Well, just goes to show what insomnia will do to a fella.

I knew a guy who’s father used to work at a lumber mill. One day, a huge bandsaw snapped and opened his skull. He fell to the ground, and his brain was sitting in sawdust. He lived. Quiet guy.
