Mobil Speedpass

How does this new technology work? What if you are pumping your gas and you accidentally waive the speedpass key past the button twice? Does it charge you twice for the gas you have pumped? Does anyone out there have the Mobil Speedpass?

I have a Speedpass. When you wave it, a light comes on to indicate that it’s activated. While the light is on, you can’t do anything by waving it again.

I believe it uses a TI chip (I forget the number). The chip is definitely powered by RF (radio frequency) energy from the pump. If it’s the TI chip with which I’m familiar, it has 16 pages of 64 bytes each. Typically the first page is used for a worldwide-unique serial number. The use for the rest of the pages depends on the application.

Related to the OP, what kind of protection do you have with Speedpass. Can I grab your keys at a party, run down to the gas station and fuel up my mobile home, boat, dune buggy, etc. then put them back? Or is there a code you need to punch in? In other words, do I have to worry about identity theft from losing my KEYS in addition to my wallet?

Just curious because I’ve thought about getting the Speedpass, but thus far, compared to Arco here in San Diego, Mobil is consistently more expensive and not worth it.

The Speedpass doesn’t use a PIN or code. If anyone steals your Speedpass, they can buy gas with it, and it gets charged to your credit card.

My wife decided we should have one, right before the Mobil station down the street went out of business. As far as I can tell, it saves you little or no time vs. just using your credit card at the pump. Just one more thing to lose or have stolen, IMHO.

I, too, have a SpeedPass that I use exclusively for my motorcycle. I carry it attached to my M/C key, and have it readily at hand. I do not need to get off of my bike nor disrobe to any degree to get gas. As a note, I ride BMW cycles, am a long distance enthusiast, and ride ALWAYS with full protective (armored Gortex and Cordura) suit and full-face helmet. My wallet stays safely tucked in my pants pocket.
