Moderation of Comments on Cecil's Columns

No, it’s not a complaint. But I notice that our beloved Noodles seems to be on hiatus, having not posted for over a month… First off, is this due to anything we ought to be concerned about? His pet scorpion didn’t decide to eat him or anything, did it?

With that said, Dex seems to be doing most of the CoCC moderating lately. OK, no problem there, he’s doing a good enough job, and it’s similar to his native CoSR. But I notice that Noodles is still listed as the only moderator for the forum. I know that all mods have powers in all fora, of course, but what about “report this post”? If that works the way I think it does, then it only sends an e-mail to the official moderators of that forum. Which presumably means that any reports from CoCC aren’t currently being read by anyone. Ought Dex to be added to that list, at least until Noodles is back?

That may have been his last post, but he visited the board today, in fact; he just didn’t make a post lately.

When he’s overly busy (like at work), he’s not real social. Sorry about that.

We all cover for one another and the various areas are looked into as we all have time.

I’ve only been a guest for 3 days, and got a responce that was really quite rude, and uncalled for,by what I thought was a harmless reply on my part, to a subject on a kitchen sink for cryin out loud. How would one respond with-out getting banned from the Straight Dope site?

Link, please, to the post in question. We’ll look at it.

If you don’t feel comfortable posting it here, you can send me an email: TubaDiva@aol.com.

Heck, I was just about to explain the way it works when I realized you were the OP

We have experimented once before with changing the email address of a mod and making it a forwarding address so that the original mod and some other mods get access to the “report post” alerts.

It worked quite well, except that a couple of mods brought up the issue of privacy, in that a mail sent to the specific mod through the profile email address would go to other parties as well, and the mod in question might not want that. A forwarding with a filter should solve that issue, so this workaround might be used in the future, if needed.

Silly idea, but if it’s not a major hassle to implement, it might work:

E-mail to the moderators of each forum should go to atmbmod@straightdope.com, cccmod@straightdope.com, gqmod@straightdope.com, etc. Each of these “e-mail addresses” is actually a forward to the “right” e-mail address(es) for the appropriate moderator(s). They can be tweaked quite simply by modifying the “alias” contents as necessary, so that when, e.g., Noodles is on work overload or Lynn is ill, it automatically gets rerouted to Dex, TubaDiva, Czarcasm, or whoever is covering. Because of the ease of rerouting the alias, you can change it as needed, for a short or long time. But leave in the listings of the standard e-mail addresses for each mod as well, so that if someone, e.g., needs to communicate directly with Dex on an issue he specifically needs to address (e.g., SDSAB), that will go directly to him, and not to whoever is covering CSR for him this week if he’s on vacation.

It also has a very useful mnemonic: [forum]mod@straightdope.com

Since the kid probably doesn’t know the system I’ll link it for you. Tuba please feel free to remove it if I’m out of line. not that my permission is needed but I’d understand.

I thought the comment was a bit abrupt Kid but perhaps not too far out of line. I mean if you think that was rough just venture over to the pit sometime.
I believe the poster in question was worried about any damage that might have occurred by mixing a caustic solution with heat and then capping the end.
In the event of a clogged drain that could result in a mild explosion. Granted we weren’t dealing with a clogged drain but some innocent might read it and try it. Better scare a kid from harm than worry about hurting another’s feelings.

It’ll be okay…
BTW: Welcome to the SDMB

Polycarp, while you make a useful suggestion, in all likelihood it probably won’t be implemented. Any change that requires the resources of the CR tech staff (especially on a repeatable basis) is avoided, which is why we tried the option I mentioned earlier.

“mitchythekid” – While the response was somewhat abrasive and perhaps the poster could have been a bit more civil, when seen in the context of the thread, it’s not so bad.

This is the not the kinder, gentler message board and sometimes our members can be acerbic. This is in no way to imply that people can abuse one another with inpunity – abuse is down the hall – but when you put an opinion out there or give advice, you should not be surprised if someone challenges it.

If you think something borders on or jumps right into abuse, please bring it to our attention. An email usually works. Click on the “report this post to a moderator” button and the moderators of the affected forum will look into it as soon as possible. That’s the ! box on the right hand side of each and every posting on the board.

And now back to our regular discussion in this thread, please.
