Moderator Name Calling In Regard To members

Some people occasionally overlook things by accident. Others are just habitually oblivious; they simply don’t care about following board rules or paying attention to what has previously been said in the thread.

It’s a good thing you cleared that up for everyone. I can’t tell you how many PM’s I’ve gotten wondering “why doesn’t Inner Stickler take me seriously?”
I can now confidently tell them it’s because they read something too fast.

How many times have you posted in violation of a moderator’s instructions? If you haven’t, it suggests you’re not one of the people the remark was directed at.

I don’t think I ever have.

Just poking fun at Inner Stickler’s sweeping generalization that someone reading too quickly or carelessly is too dumb to be taken seriously. There are lots of reasons things can be missed, forgotten, misinterpreted, purposely ignored etc. etc. etc. - it’s funny to me that the conclusion is simply that in all cases they are “too dumb”.

I wouldn’t like to see a tagging ability I already enjoy (such as posting in whatever color I choose) taken away for the exclusive use of mods, but if vBB software supports a function only for certain members, I could see enabling that function only for mods.

Just as a f’rinstance, enable avatars only for mods (I presume that if the software could enable them for members but not guests, it could be further filtered to enable them only for mods and admins). When the moderator wants to moderate a specific violation, he (or she) could stick his/her personal avatar on the offending post, and also put that avatar on the post that gives the instruction to knock it off.

I’m no expert on the vBB software, of course, There may be any number of technical reasons why my specific example would not work. But in principle, I wouldn’t mind seeing official moderation tags on official moderation posts, and if it could be done without grossly inconveniencing Jerry Davis (and without incurring an extra expense to Creative Loafing), I think it should be considered, if only to free ATMB from threads complaining about the moderation being ambiguous.

I think that it wouldn’t matter how a moderator post appeared, because some people won’t think it could possibly pertain to anything they did, and it will remain unread. Add to these the number of posters that just have to get the last word in, those that think “Them’s fightin’ words!” can excuse anything, and those that think that adding “I’m not arguing-I’m just saying…” means that they are exempt from moderator edicts to knock it off, and you can see that the problem has little to do with the appearance of the mod post.

Now if I did have an avatar for issuing Moderator Warnings, it would definitely be Huitzilopochtli, the Southern Hummingbird, the Aztec god of blood and human sacrifice. Now that would get their attention.

Maybe I’m overthinking the color issue, but, just for the sake of argument, what about color-blind people? Someone without the ability to process the color red wouldn’t see the text differently, anyway. And, of course, I realize that very few, if any, posters here are color-blind. But it could creatively give some people a loophole by saying they didn’t recognize the altered text. After all, how many people lie when pulled over for speeding or running a stop sign?

I don’t know if that specifically is possible, but features can be enabled for different user groups. So something like that can be doable. I really don’t think it’s necessary, though.

How about mods just not be jerks? Wouldn’t that kind of solve a lot of issues in ATMB?

You’re definitely new around here. Seriously, as far as the site rules go (“We have one guiding principle: Don’t be a jerk.”), neither Miller nor I were being jerks in that thread. It’s The BBQ Pit, and that’s how that forum works.

Why should everyone else have all the fun?

Oh, this thread has moved beyond what happens in The Pit.

Then of course you know how the rules for behaviour in ATMB are different from the rules for behaviour in The BBQ Pit, and plan on acting accordingly, right?

True though. The board is a written medium, if you’re not going to devote 30 seconds to note if a moderator post is moderating then I’m not going to be sympathetic to your whiny cries of we need color we need large fonts we need someone to hold our hand. (Guess what, people don’t pay any more attention to color coded modding than monochrome. Just ask What Exit?)

Ummmm, yes. I never thought of hummingbirds being bloodthirsty before…

Ounce for ounce, they’re one of the feistiest critters on the planet - which is why the Aztecs chose one for their war god.

Yeah. You should see what they do to a flower. Makes a bee yellow with envy.

It’s not the size that matters, but what do can do with it!
