Thanks to you, Qadgop, I looked up Gharlane of Eddore, whom I knew some years back on the rastb5 Usenet group. Much to my sorrow, I found that he had died back in 2001. I also found that he had been using that Usenet & email alias for around 30 years, having received permission directly from Doc Smith himself.

Such a great loss. It seems Gharlane was one of the few people who could debate Harlan Ellison to a draw.
