The only problem is he doesn’t really know much about how to go about it.

I have only a small amount of basic computer knowledge and I’m wondering if you all can help point me in the right direction.
I’m looking to spend $800-1000. Is it possible, given that range, to get a decent machine? with CD burner? printer? scanner? Do you recommend any companies I should buy from? any I should avoid? I know Gateway offers a lot of customer support which is great, and has affordable monthly payment plans, but they seem a bit more on the expensive side. A friend of mine also advised me to by it online because shipping is cheaper than store tax.
Depending on the city you live in, go to a Ma and Pa outfit and they will make one up for you. Usually they have some package deals already, and the prices are usually far better than a big-box chains’ computers…not to mention a better product to.
how much your going to spend depends on what you want to do with the system. just surf the web and burn a few cd’s? you should be okay with a 600hmz machine, hell you can get a 933 from some of the “Big box” companies for a grand. Beyond that, the more you want to do, and be able to do well, you’ll have to pay more money
I have to agree with bernse, your best bet is probably to go to a local computer store that makes package deals where you can add/remove features that you want or don’t want. The difference in cost shouldn’t play a factor as they will probably cost pretty much the same; but if you have any problems with a local-bought one you can go back there and get help (well, of course, check if theres any warranty first with either), whereas if you buy online getting any hardware problems fixed would be quite a hassle. These products are usually just as good as other systems bought online and they are always a better deal than any pre-assembled systems from the “big box” companies. However, just as with an online company, check if the local one is reputable first.
Try reading PCWorld, jan 2001. It discusses this sort of thing. Interesting article about how they cut back in some areas inorder to keep PC prices low.
Moe, how about looking at an ad in the paper for a used system? At least youll know it works & you can get a real cheap price.
