Mom, can I borrow the car?

With all the controversy over how early schoolchildren should be taught sex education, we often overlook the issue of when they should receive driver education.

Apparently, first grade. Otherwise, they’ll just pick up bad information from video games.

Part of me is reacting to how incredibly dangerous that was, and how lucky the boy was to not get seriously hurt, or to hurt anyone else, and part of me is thinking “aww, that’s cute!” I don’t think I ever wanted to get to school that badly!

Here’s a longer version of the story. It’s an amazing incident. And the boy seems to have a really lousy home life. “[T]he father … was under a court order not to leave the 6-year-old and his 4-year-old brother alone with their mother.” How screwed up is that?

Sad to say, the longer article linked above suggests that his primary motivation may have been the breakfast provided at school.

Yeah, I figured there was more to the story since the first one said the parents were being charged with negligence and the children had been taken from the parents. I’ve known of a few kids like that (my mom is a teacher, so has seen it all!) - they take care of themselves, or even of their parents and are incredibly resourceful, but they are still just children. I hope both of these kids end up in a good situation where they will be fed, cared for and allowed to grow up slowly rather than right away.
