My mom died a few months ago. There’s no reason that a patient suffer. There are several suitable drugs; one being a morphine patch.
grrrr.
Concerning the original problem: I believe a hitting nurse/doctor/anyone would hit the helpless habitually.
That this hypothetical thug would be kept very long seems very unlikely. Personally, I’m leaning toward the bad dream explanation. Partly because I once came out of anesthetic with 6 interns holding me during a very bad dream.

I hope your mother is more comfortable soon. I am sorry that you and she had to deal with an assault on her from staff as well as the ravages of her illness.
