I just turned on the TV to watch the game and there flying over the stadium are military helicopters and the music blarring. The music is Wagner’s Ride of the Valkeries! Can this be? They think a scene from Apocalypse Now is a Patriotic tribute? Surley they did not mean this to be satire or an anti war statement. Or are they just unaware of the movie? How can that be? I can’t believe what I just saw!
Anyone else?
Loud orchestral music + military aircraft = the sound of freedom. The specific music doesn’t matter; as long as people vaguely remember seeing it used to make some aircraft look badass (which it most certainly did in Apocalypse Now), it’ll get the job done.
(By the way, I was watching the pre-race show at a NASCAR game about two years ago, and they had a military flyover, to which the announcer actually said, “That’s the sounds of Freedom, folks.” I jumped up and pumped my fist in the air.)
I definitely think it was going too far when they dumped napalm on the fans.
Uh, make that a NASCAR race.
