Whenever I am preparing some document to print, the actual size on paper does not match the size on the screen so I have to do some conversions. In Word I have to set the size on the screen to a percentage so that it will match the size on paper. Word at least allows you to adjust the image size but Paint and other programs do not. Now that I am running dual monitors, a 17" and a 15", it gets even more complicated beause the DPI on each monitor is different and windows change size when I move them from one screen to the other screen. So I have done some tests:
17" monitor at 1024 x 768: 82.2 DPI
15" monitor at 800 x 600: 72.2 DPI
Printer: 96 DPI (Of course it is higher but 96 pixels
on the screen take an inch on paper when I print.
If I could adjust the 15" screen to about 910 x 682 then the resolution on both monitors would be about the same but the options are 800x600 and 1024x768. Why isn’t there a setting half way between the two? In fact, why are there only a few discrete settings and why can’t one just choose whatever resolution he wants? Is there any way to do this?
Now, if I try:
17" monitor at 1152 x 864: 92.7 DPI
15" monitor at 1024 x 768: 92.4 DPI
they come pretty close to each other and closer to the printer but still not quite the 96 DPI.
For now I think I will keep the higher resolution on both as this way they are, at least, about the same DPI. I’ll just have to bring my nose right up to the screen.
Any way to match printer and screen resolutions? Any way do set a non-standard resolution on the monitors?
