After reading a few articles in a couple of magazines and going to the zoo I have given thought to purchasing a monkey. To be more specific, a bush baby.
I have NO idea where or how to buy one. I realize that this might be an impulse buy, but I figure after I find out whether or not I can actually purchase one I will do more research.
Does anyone have any information on where I can go to purchase a bush baby, or for that matter, any exotic pets?
I live in the United States, Virginia to be exact-if this helps.
Also any info on bush babies in general would be appreciated. I heard the piss on there hands in order to climb…Anyone know anything about this?
Well, you could try Jack’s Bush Babies in Fairfax, Bush Baby Haven in Great Falls, or Ye Olde Bush Baby Shoppe in Colonial Williamsburg.
Seriously, save your impulse buys for Starscrolls and the National Enquirer. Bush babies are living creatures and are not accustomed, despite what you might hear, to American life. The tone of your message suggests you are not as well-informed as you should be about these animals. That being said, once you feel you can provide a healthy and nurturing life for an animal, and experts have agreed with you, go for it (provided they are legal).
Sorry to be a party pooper, but your party will really be pooped if a cute ( http://mommensj.web2010.com/bush.jpg ) animal dies and it’s your fault.
Monkeypants (yeah yeah. No, there are no BBs in my family)
P.S. The band would be “MonkeE question”

I’d stay away from monkeys if I were you you, they double-post a lot, you know…
It is legal to keep primates in Virginia:
http://www.api4animals.org/doc.asp?ID=372
But I don’t know why anyone would want one. It would be a tremendous amount of work to meet such an intelligent animal’s needs, and keeping them safely confined has got to very difficult. I wouldn’t want to keep any animal as a pet that has opposable thumbs! Finding a vet with the knowledge to care for a primate wouldn’t be easy either, and there are no U.S. rabies vaccines that are approved for use in non-human primates.
Bush babies are also nocturnal, which means they’d be up and about while you are trying to sleep. They eat bugs, and they can leap great distances.
You might want to take a look at this site, which describes the challenges of having an exotic pet:
I know I double-posted (damn firewall). I figured why triple-post just to point it out? I’ll just email a mod and ask to have it removed. No such luck yet though.
Jeez. A bush baby.
Monk
Sorry, all. We generally only remove a double post when no one comments on it, on account of removing it would make the subsequent stuff confusing to our readership.
Monkeypants, it might have been your firewall, but things on our end seem to have been a little wonky for a week or so. It’s probably a combination of slowness here and your firewall that made you hit that button a second time.
No big deal though. If a double post is the worst thing to happen in GQ in a day, well, that’s a pretty good day.
Ah…Some good advice here. Now to tell the truth-I am terribly interested in those monkeys! But the fact is that I live at home, with my parents, and that I would not be able to get a BB until I move out-in about a year or so. I didn’t realize that, in fairfax no less, I could actually GET a BB. Now I will start on my research, which will probably diswayed me long before my eventual relocation. This usually happens when I get interested in something unfortunately…no pet alligators…muskrats…lions
…tigers…bears…
I was wondering, has anyone out there actually owned a BB, or another type of monkey? What has your experience been like?
Umm…Whups…Upon rereading your email message I have seen my error. Although my stubborn google check confirmed my ignorance in my last post… I guess I was thrown off by your knowledge of the area…yeah…That’s the ticket…my stupidity is YOUR fault…hahaha…
Gotta say it.
I don’t believe bush babies are considered monkeys. They are primates, but are grouped in a family of their own–galagoniidae. All the standard warnings against owning a monkey would certainly still apply to them, though.
Here’s a site with general info on primate care, including bush babies.

True, but there are those who feel that the experience of having a primate is worth the effort. I’ve heard it said that having a monkey is like having a 2 year old child in your house for 20-40 years, which I personally find rather unappealing, but I guess there are those who would enjoy that sort of thing.
Here’s another good site. It has testimony from numerous primate owners, and it also talks about a group of lawyers trying to get chimpanzees legally recognizes as legal persons. That’s right, legal personhood for chimps. Sounds silly, but they’re very serious about it.
