Monkey Wrench

Ok, I think that this is a pointless question so I didn’t really know where to put it. (I really know which board I am posting to today. :))

In the Foo Fighters song Monkey Wrench, what does “one in ten” refer to? Just wondering.

Hmmm, now I’m curious. I read the lyrics and still can’t figure it out. Is it a running theme on the album SoMo?

I always figured from the lyrics that he didn’t want to be the tenth person this girl dumped. In the song, to me, he’s singing about leaving this girl before she has a chance to dump him. But that’s just what I was thinking.

I thought it was about the “one in ten” people who (according to some estimates) are gay. If you read the above link (thank you) it could be about someone outing himself, and his friends rejecting him “what do you do when all your enemies are friends”; people referring to him as “one more indecent accident” ala Dr. Laura; not fitting the cookie cutter mold of society “now and then I’ll try to bend under pressure wind up snapping in the end”, and the blessed relief of the end of concealing one’s true nature “still there’s one thing that comforts me since I was always caged and now I’m free”.

Or, I could be as right as the guy who looks for meaning in the song “number nine” by the beatles.

It’s not a running theme on the album.

I always thought it’s a song about someone that is working for someone or really good friends with someone that takes advantage of the relationship to sabotage other people to get ahead. And then this person is fed up and quitting.
